The best camping gift fits the way its recipient camps—and the gear they already own. For car campers, consider campsite organization, cold storage, comfort, or lighting; for someone who hikes from a base camp, a compact daypack may be more useful. These five examples come from REI’s October 2025 gift guide, so treat the listed specifications as guide details, not confirmation of current models, stock, or prices.
How to choose a camping gift
Start with the recipient’s routine, not the most impressive-looking piece of gear. Car campers can bring bulkier items to a site; backpackers need gifts that earn their place in a pack. Before buying, consider:
- Camping style: Is the gift for a vehicle-accessible campsite, backpacking, or short hikes from a base camp?
- Existing gear: A useful item can still be a duplicate. If you do not know what the person owns, a gift card lets them choose.
- What is included: Check whether a required accessory or power source is sold separately.
- Size and weight: These matter especially when the gift will be carried rather than transported by car.
Five camping gift ideas by use
For carrying chilled food from car to camp: YETI Hopper Flip 12 Soft Cooler
REI’s 2025 guide presents this soft cooler as an option for moving chilled items from a car to a campsite. It lists dimensions of 12.6 × 11.5 × 10 inches and a weight of 3 lb. 6.4 oz. Those figures are from the guide, not a current listing check. Confirm the present model and specifications before purchase. See REI’s camping gift guide.
For organizing a car-camping setup: REI Co-op Trailgate Gear Bin
The guide lists three sizes: 60, 100, and 140 liters. Trailgate Gear Cubes are compatible, but sold separately, so check whether the recipient wants the bin alone or is likely to need the cubes as well. Its size makes it a better fit for vehicle-based camping than for someone trying to minimize carried gear. See REI’s camping gift guide.
#1 Best Overall
For short hikes from a base camp: REI Co-op Flash 22 Pack
REI’s guide gives the Flash 22 a 22-liter capacity and a listed weight of 14 ounces, and positions it for day trips from a base camp. That use case is distinct from buying a pack for a backpacking trip, where the recipient’s preferred fit and carrying needs should guide the choice. See REI’s camping gift guide.
For relaxing at camp: ENO DoubleNest hammock
The guide describes the DoubleNest as a two-person hammock with a 400-pound capacity. Its suspension system is sold separately, so account for that additional component when deciding whether the gift will be ready to use. See REI’s camping gift guide.

For campsite ambience: REVEL GEAR Trail Hound 30 ft. Camping Light
The guide lists this camping light at 30 feet long and 1.6 ounces, with warm-white and multicolor versions and compatibility with standard USB power sources. A battery pack is not included in the pictured listing; check the current product listing and the recipient’s power setup before buying. See REI’s camping gift guide.
When you do not know what gear they own
A gift card is a practical fallback if you are unsure about the recipient’s camping style, existing kit, or preferred models. REI’s general gift page includes gift cards; check its current options and terms before purchasing. View REI gift cards.
