No strike began when the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) opened its command center on June 5, 2024. The union described it as a communications and strike-readiness operation while contract talks were still underway. The dispute later ended with flight attendants ratifying a new agreement, American Airlines announced in September 2024.
What the command center was for
APFA said it opened the center at its headquarters in Euless, Texas, to coordinate communications and help members prepare in case a strike became possible. The union said it represented more than 27,000 American Airlines flight attendants at the time; that is APFA’s June 2024 figure, not a current headcount.
The operation included a hotline, written information and videos, a mailed strike handbook, and member communications. APFA also said trained representatives at each of its ten crew bases would support members. These were preparation and communication measures—not an announcement that employees were walking out.
In its June 5 release, then APFA National President and career flight attendant Julie Hedrick said: “Flight Attendants have not had a raise in over five years. It’s time for American Airlines management to conclude these negotiations and pay Flight Attendants for their work today and retroactively,” APFA said. That pay statement was the union president’s position in an advocacy release, not an independently established statistic.

What happened after the center opened
- June 5, 2024: APFA announced the command center while federally mediated negotiations were continuing, according to the union’s announcement.
- June 20, 2024: APFA said mediated talks had ended without an agreement and that internal strike preparations would continue under the Railway Labor Act process. This was the union’s account of the bargaining status at that time, in its June 20 update.
- September 2024: American Airlines announced that its flight attendants had ratified a new collective bargaining agreement, resolving the strike threat described in the earlier union updates. See the airline’s ratification announcement.
Did opening the center mean a strike was imminent?
No. A command center showed that APFA was organizing communications and readiness; it did not establish that a strike had been called or that flight attendants were legally free to strike. APFA said a release from federally mediated negotiations and a 30-day cooling-off period were steps in the process before a potential strike. That is the union’s description of the process in its June 2024 announcement, not a complete explanation of the Railway Labor Act or a statement about any later legal determination.
