In June 2025, customers reported that staples used to attach receipts to Nintendo Switch 2 boxes at one GameStop store in Staten Island, New York, punctured console screens. GameStop said the incident was isolated to that store and that affected customers were offered or given replacements. In a July follow-up, the company said the damaged consoles had been repaired and returned to circulation.

What happened at the Staten Island GameStop?

Customers reported that store employees stapled receipts to Switch 2 boxes and that the staples pierced the screens inside. Tom’s Hardware reported the customer accounts on June 5, 2025, then updated its coverage the next day with GameStop’s response. GameSpot described the console as positioned just beneath the box flap, with its screen facing upward, which helps explain how a staple through the packaging could reach it.

What did GameStop say, and how many consoles were affected?

GameStop told Tom’s Hardware: “These occurrences were isolated to a single store in Staten Island, NY. The affected customers—who represented a very small fraction—were swiftly given replacements.” A separate company statement reproduced by Nintendo Everything said: “We’ve addressed a unique case of staples damaging Switch 2 screens – isolated to one store. Replacements have been offered. Staplers have been confiscated.”

The available reporting does not establish a verified number of affected customers. Online claims about a larger total were not confirmed by GameStop; its phrase “a very small fraction” is a qualitative description, not a count.

What happened to the damaged consoles?

In a July 2025 follow-up, GamesRadar+ reported GameStop’s statement that affected customers had been “made whole” and the damaged consoles were repaired and sent back into circulation. The outlet also reported that GameStop auctioned repaired consoles and related items to benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Does this incident establish a repair or replacement policy for other owners?

No. GameStop’s statements addressed customers involved in this specific store incident. They do not establish a general replacement, repair, or warranty rule for Switch 2 owners whose consoles are damaged elsewhere. Eligibility, cost, and available remedies for a different case are not established by this incident; contact the retailer or the appropriate regional Nintendo support channel for case-specific guidance.

For context only, Nintendo UK’s official packaging guidance asks customers sending products for inspection to protectively wrap them and use sufficient packaging. It concerns UK repair shipments, not the US incident or its resolution, and does not determine warranty coverage for a console damaged at the Staten Island store.
