You can buy XRP through a centralized exchange that supports it in your location, or through a wallet app that connects to a third-party purchase provider. After buying, choose whether to leave XRP in the service’s custody or move it to a wallet you control. The tradeoff is straightforward: custody can be convenient, while self-custody makes you responsible for protecting your keys and recovery material.
What you need to know before buying XRP
XRP is the native token of the XRP Ledger. The XRPL documentation explains that a wallet helps manage an account and its funds, and that a person can buy XRP through an exchange and withdraw it to an address they specify. See XRP Ledger’s explanation of crypto wallets and its account documentation.
- Availability is location-dependent. An exchange or purchase provider may not serve your jurisdiction or allow XRP withdrawals there. Confirm local eligibility, fees, withdrawal limits, and support with the provider before funding an account.
- Buying and custody are separate decisions. An exchange may let you buy XRP and keep it there, or withdraw it to a self-custody wallet.
- Sending XRP requires care. Some exchange deposits require a destination tag or memo in addition to the address. Follow the receiving service’s current deposit instructions.
- Self-custody shifts responsibility to you. Losing access to recovery material or sending to the wrong destination can put access to your funds at risk; a wallet does not remove every security risk.
How to buy XRP
Option 1: Buy through an exchange
- Check availability and withdrawal support. Choose an exchange that serves your jurisdiction and confirm it supports XRP deposits or withdrawals if you intend to move your purchase elsewhere.
- Review costs and requirements. Check the exchange’s current fees, funding methods, withdrawal limits, identity checks, and deposit instructions. These details vary by provider and location.
- Open and fund your account. Use the exchange’s official sign-up and funding process. Protect the account with a strong, unique password and any additional security features it offers.
- Place an XRP order. Review the order details and fees before confirming. The available order types and quoted price depend on the exchange.
- Choose where to hold the XRP. You can leave it with the exchange or withdraw it to a self-custody wallet. If withdrawing, confirm the destination address and any required tag or memo before submitting.
Keeping XRP on an exchange means relying on that service to control access to the assets. XRPL.org notes that exchanges can use shared XRP Ledger accounts for customers, rather than giving each customer an individually controlled ledger account. That arrangement may make trading convenient, but you depend on the platform’s account security, operations, and ability to process withdrawals. See XRPL.org’s account documentation.
Option 2: Buy through a wallet app’s provider
Some wallet apps offer a purchase flow through a third-party provider that sends the purchased XRP to a wallet address. This is still a purchase facilitated by a service provider; it does not guarantee a lower price, universal access, or reduced risk. Ledger says availability of its integrated third-party services depends on the user’s region. Check the provider’s eligibility, quoted price, fees, and delivery details before proceeding. Ledger’s XRP buying guide describes this type of route.

Choose how to store XRP
The main difference is who controls the keys needed to authorize transactions. XRPL.org describes custodial wallets as managed by a third party and explains that hardware wallets can isolate key information from an internet-connected computer or phone. Its overview is general guidance, not a guarantee that any particular wallet or device is invulnerable. Read the XRPL wallet documentation.
| Storage choice | Who controls access? | Main tradeoff | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exchange account | The exchange controls custody or pooled ledger accounts on customers’ behalf. | Convenient for trading on that platform, but access and withdrawals depend on the service. | Check account security, withdrawal support, fees, and the provider’s terms. |
| Software self-custody wallet | You control the secret keys through wallet software. | You avoid giving an exchange sole control, but must protect keys on devices that may connect to the internet. | Use software from a trustworthy source and secure your recovery material. The sources cited here do not establish a ranking of software wallets. |
| Hardware wallet | You control the keys; a physical device is used to authorize transactions. | It can isolate key information from a connected computer or phone, but secure setup and recovery remain your responsibility. | Review transaction details on the device, protect the recovery backup, and consider the device and software supply chain. |
What a hardware wallet can—and cannot—do
A hardware wallet is designed to keep key information separate from a connected computer or phone when the device is not in use. That reduces one kind of exposure, but it does not make every part of the process risk-free. You still need to initialize the device safely, protect its recovery backup, use trustworthy software, and check transaction details before approving them.

For example, Ledger lists XRP as supported by its Nano X product. That listing establishes product compatibility according to the vendor; it is not an independent comparison of security. Verify current XRP support and buy from a seller you trust.
How to transfer XRP to a wallet or exchange
When withdrawing XRP from an exchange, use the receiving wallet’s or exchange’s instructions—not an old address or a saved deposit screen you have not checked. Ledger’s XRP guidance notes that a transfer to a centralized exchange may need a destination tag or memo. Whether one is required depends on the receiving service. See Ledger’s XRP wallet guidance.

- In the receiving service, open its XRP deposit instructions and copy the current address.
- Check whether it requires a destination tag or memo. If required, copy that value exactly into the withdrawal form’s corresponding field.
- Compare the withdrawal address and tag or memo character by character with the receiving instructions before submitting.
- Review the amount, network, and displayed fee, then submit the withdrawal according to the exchange’s process.
- Check the receiving wallet or service for the deposit. If it does not arrive as expected, use the sending exchange’s and receiving service’s support channels and provide the transaction details they request.
Secure your XRP after purchase
Good security depends on the whole path: the account or wallet you use, the device and software, and how you protect recovery information. A hardware wallet is one option, not a substitute for careful handling.
- Protect exchange accounts. Use a unique password and available account-security controls; confirm withdrawal details before authorizing a transfer.
- Keep recovery material private. Anyone who obtains self-custody recovery information may be able to access the wallet. Do not share it with a person claiming to provide support.
- Verify wallet software and devices. A device’s isolation features do not eliminate the importance of trustworthy software and a secure supply chain.
- Review every transaction. Confirm the destination and any tag or memo before approving or submitting a transfer.
- Be wary of urgency and guaranteed returns. A request to reveal recovery information or act under pressure is a reason to stop and verify through official channels.
What to verify before choosing a provider
Provider coverage, costs, and withdrawal rules can change and vary by region. The sources cited here do not establish a best exchange for every reader, current provider fees or limits, or jurisdiction-specific eligibility. Before buying, verify those details directly with the service, along with whether you can withdraw XRP to an address you control.
