Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao is the best-supported leader among the documented boxing pay-per-view events here: Guinness World Records reports 4.4 million purchases and $425 million grossed. Reuters separately reported $400 million in U.S. pay-per-view revenue from the same 4.4 million buys. Those numbers describe different measures, so there is no sound basis in the available reporting for a precise, apples-to-apples ranking of ten events by pay-per-view revenue.

The comparison below instead ranks the major events for which the cited sources provide useful commercial figures, while making each figure’s scope explicit. It is not a claim that all ten places in an all-time revenue ranking have been established.

How to read an “earning” ranking

Pay-per-view purchases, pay-per-view revenue, ticket sales and total event revenue are different measures. A buy count does not establish how much money an event made: prices and market coverage can vary. Nor should gate receipts or other revenue be added to pay-per-view revenue unless a source defines a consistent total.

The figures below are reported amounts, not a standardized financial dataset. Geography and revenue scope are identified where the cited reporting provides them; an unspecified scope is not assumed to mean worldwide. Dollar amounts are not adjusted for inflation.

Major boxing PPV events ranked by reported commercial scale

This is an approximate comparison, not a verified top ten by PPV-only revenue. The entries are ordered by the scale of the reported figures, with the important distinction that some figures cover total event revenue or ticket gate rather than PPV receipts alone.

Approx. rank Event and date Reported figure What the figure measures
1 Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao, May 2, 2015 4.4 million purchases; $425 million grossed Guinness World Records’ current record page reports these figures, but does not establish that the dollar amount is a consistent PPV-only measure. Reuters reported $400 million in U.S. PPV revenue from 4.4 million buys, attributing the figures to Showtime and HBO. Guinness World Records; Reuters (2015).
2 Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor, August 26, 2017 4.3 million domestic buys; more than $600 million ESPN reported Showtime figures. The buy count is domestic; the $600 million-plus amount is total event revenue, not PPV revenue alone. ESPN (2017).
3 Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Canelo Álvarez, September 14, 2013 2.2 million buys; $150 million PPV revenue ESPN reported the revenue figure from Showtime and promoters. ESPN described the event as the PPV revenue record before Mayweather-Pacquiao. ESPN (2013); ESPN (record context).
4 Oscar De La Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr., May 5, 2007 2.15 million buys; $120 million PPV revenue ESPN reported HBO’s figures at the time and said the buy total was expected to rise. Later reports cite higher totals, so this is an early reported tally rather than a settled final figure. ESPN (2007).
5 Canelo Álvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin, September 16, 2017 More than 1.3 million buys; more than $27 million in ticket sales Time reported these figures in 2022. The dollar amount is ticket gate, not PPV revenue, so it cannot be compared directly with the PPV-revenue figures above. Time (2022).
6–10 Additional events not stated The sources cited here do not establish five further event-level revenue figures on a comparable basis. No dollar amount or rank is inferred for those places.

What the best-documented comparisons establish

Mayweather-Pacquiao leads the documented PPV figures

The event’s 4.4 million purchases are reported by both Guinness World Records and Reuters. Their dollar figures differ: Guinness gives $425 million grossed, while Reuters reports $400 million in U.S. PPV revenue attributed to Showtime and HBO. Because “grossed” is not defined there as the same measure as U.S. PPV revenue, neither figure should silently replace the other.

Mayweather-McGregor’s headline total is not PPV revenue

Its more-than-$600 million figure is total event revenue. The separately reported 4.3 million domestic buys help show its scale, but do not turn the total-revenue figure into a PPV-only amount.

Record claims depend on the reporting date

The sequence in the cited contemporary reporting is clear: ESPN reported $120 million in PPV revenue for Mayweather-De La Hoya in 2007, described Mayweather-Canelo’s $150 million in 2013 as a record, and Mayweather-Pacquiao surpassed that in 2015. De La Hoya-Mayweather’s early count was expected to grow, and later reports cite higher totals, so its 2007 number should not be presented as an uncontested final tally.

Buy counts and revenue answer different questions

A ranking by buys measures how many purchases were reported; a ranking by revenue measures money, and must specify which revenue. Differences in price, market coverage, and later revisions can change the relationship between those rankings. The evidence cited here supports prominent individual figures, but not ten comparable PPV-revenue entries.

For broader context, Guinness World Records reports Mayweather’s career aggregate as $1.7 billion in PPV sales across 23.98 million buys over 16 fights. That is a career total, not the result of one event, and should not be inserted into an event ranking. Guinness World Records.
