Reuters reported on July 12, 2024, that Elon Musk had donated a “sizable amount” to America PAC, a committee working to elect Donald Trump. Reuters’ account relayed Bloomberg reporting based on unnamed sources, and it gave no dollar figure. Later reporting based on federal filings put Musk’s cumulative contributions to the PAC above $118.5 million by mid-October 2024—but that later total is not the amount specified in the July report.

What did the July 2024 report say?

Reuters reported that Musk had given an unspecified “sizable amount” to America PAC. The story attributed the report to Bloomberg, which cited sources; it did not identify a sum or present an FEC filing confirming the contribution. Reuters via Investing.com, July 12, 2024.

Musk had earlier posted, “Just to be super clear, I am not donating money to either candidate for US President.” That statement preceded the July 12 report; it should not be read as a response to a publicly disclosed filing about America PAC. Reuters via Investing.com.

Who received the reported contribution?

The recipient named in the report was America PAC, not Trump’s campaign. The Federal Election Commission lists America PAC as an active, quarterly, independent expenditure-only committee, registered on May 22, 2024, under committee ID C00879510. FEC committee profile.

An independent expenditure-only committee, often called a Super PAC, is distinct from a candidate’s campaign committee. The FEC classification establishes the committee’s status; it does not by itself confirm any particular contribution or show how the committee spent it.

Why the June filing did not answer the question

On July 15, The Washington Post reported that America PAC’s filing covering contributions through June 30 showed more than $8.5 million raised and did not name Musk. The report also described contributions from several of his associates. Because the filing’s coverage ended June 30, his absence from it did not settle whether he contributed later, as the July 12 report suggested. The Washington Post, July 15, 2024.

What later filings showed about Musk’s total

FactCheck.org reported in an October 28, 2024 update that mid-October FEC filings showed Musk had contributed more than $118.5 million to America PAC. This is a later cumulative figure covering a different reporting period, not a retroactive dollar value for the “sizable amount” in the July headline. FactCheck.org, updated October 28, 2024.

FactCheck.org also reported that Musk described the PAC’s purpose as “to promote the principles that make America great in the first place.” It said he called a media report that he planned to give $45 million per month “not true.” That reported plan should not be treated as a confirmed pledge; the later filing-based cumulative figure is separate evidence.
