SK hynix leads the cited HBM market-share estimates, while Micron and Samsung have also reported HBM4 production milestones. Their headline specifications are not a like-for-like test: capacity, bandwidth and power claims depend on generation and stack configuration, and a sample shipment is not the same as mass production. Here is what each company has publicly reported as of October 4, 2026—and what those claims do and do not establish.

What HBM is—and why these suppliers are not interchangeable with RAM brands

High-bandwidth memory (HBM) is DRAM stacked vertically and connected through thousands of through-silicon vias (TSVs). The wide interface is designed to move data at high rates for AI accelerators and high-performance computing (HPC) systems. Micron describes HBM as a specialist platform component, in contrast with conventional DDR memory used for general computing tasks. It is not an ordinary desktop or server DIMM, nor a general-purpose consumer upgrade: the memory is integrated into a platform designed to use it. Micron’s HBM4 overview

When comparing suppliers, keep several measures separate. Capacity is how much data a stack holds; bandwidth is its data-transfer rate. Pin speed and interface width are design characteristics that contribute to bandwidth, while power-efficiency claims need a named baseline and test method. Supply terms also matter: development, sampling, qualification, commercial shipment, mass production and high-volume production describe different stages.

How the reported products and supply milestones compare

The figures below are manufacturer-reported specifications, not results from a common independent test. “Not stated” means the cited public material does not provide that comparison; it does not mean the product has no such capability.

Samsung HBM4 Samsung reports up to 3.3 TB/s per stack, 11.7 Gbps transfer speed and up to 13 Gbps. Do not read the largest bandwidth number as a winner by itself. The cited claims differ in product generation, configuration and qualification stage, and the sources do not provide a shared test protocol. None establishes comparative yields or delivered volumes across all three suppliers.

Who leads HBM market share?

The cited estimates put SK hynix in the lead, but they do not form one continuous, directly comparable series: the metric and period differ. They are third-party estimates as attributed by SK hynix in its market outlook and SEC-filed registration statement, not company-reported product benchmarks.

Period Metric and estimate Attribution and cited source

Q3 2025 57% of HBM revenue Counterpoint Research, as cited in SK hynix’s 2026 market outlook
Q1 2026 56.4% of HBM revenue IDC, as attributed in SK hynix’s SEC-filed registration statement

Shipment share counts units or shipments on the estimating firm’s basis; revenue share measures sales value. A change between these percentages cannot be treated as a clean trend because the periods and measures differ. Nor do the estimates reveal customer-by-customer allocation or prove which stack performs best in a particular accelerator.

What each supplier’s public record indicates

SK hynix: strongest position in the cited share snapshots

Its public timeline moves from completed HBM4 development and production-system preparation to reported HBM4 mass production, followed by HBM4E sample shipments. SK hynix also said customer demand exceeded its supply capabilities in its Q2 2026 results. That supports a picture of active execution and supply pressure, but it is not an independently verified comparison of output or yields with Micron and Samsung.

In the development announcement, SK hynix HBM Development head Cho Joo-hwan called HBM4 development completion “a new milestone for the industry.” This is the company’s English translation of his statement, not an independent assessment. SK hynix’s development announcement

Samsung: commercial HBM4 shipments, with HBM4E at the sample stage

Samsung’s February 2026 announcement reports mass production and commercial customer shipments of HBM4, while its May announcement describes HBM4E sample shipments. Those are materially different supply milestones: samples are delivered for evaluation and do not establish mass production or broad revenue contribution. Samsung Memory Development EVP and Head Sang Joon Hwang described HBM4E as demonstrating the company’s “distinct technological edge”; that is Samsung’s characterization, not an independent finding. Samsung’s HBM4E announcement

Micron: HBM4 high-volume production, with an older customer snapshot

Micron’s current portfolio page identifies its 36GB 12-high HBM4 as being in high-volume production. A separate investor presentation dated September 23, 2025 said Micron had six HBM customers and pricing agreements covering most of its 2026 HBM3E supply. That is a historical snapshot: it should not be read as the company’s current customer count or as a present-day statement about HBM4 customer status. Micron investor material, September 23, 2025

How to judge a supplier comparison

  • Match the generation and stack configuration. HBM4 and HBM4E figures are not interchangeable, and a 12-high configuration should not be compared casually with a different stack configuration.
  • Read the exact metric and baseline. Bandwidth is per stack in the claims above; power-efficiency percentages are vendor comparisons against HBM3E, not independent system-level measurements.
  • Separate specifications from supply status. A sample shipment shows evaluation-stage delivery; mass production, commercial shipment and high-volume production are stronger but still distinct claims.
  • Check the share measure and quarter. Shipment and revenue share answer different questions, and the cited estimates come from different periods.
  • Ask what is verified for the customer’s platform. Public announcements do not establish qualification for every accelerator, actual allocation, comparative yields or a buyer’s delivered performance.

For investors, the supplier announcements and market estimates are evidence about a competitive supply market, not enough on their own to determine the value of any company’s shares. HBM is also not a retail memory upgrade that an individual can choose independently of a compatible accelerator or platform.
