The Wall Street Journal reported in February 2025 that Marko Elez, a 25-year-old staff member of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), resigned after the newspaper asked the White House about his connection to a deleted social-media account that advocated racism and eugenics. The reporting also said Elez had gained access to the Treasury Department’s central-payments system. The posts were attributed to an account reportedly linked to Elez; the cited coverage did not independently establish who authored them.
What happened
The Wall Street Journal said Elez resigned on a Thursday after it contacted the White House about his connection to the account. Gizmodo’s February 6, 2025 report attributed confirmation of the resignation to White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt. Gizmodo reported that the account had been deleted in December.
The Journal described Elez as one of Elon Musk’s associates deployed through DOGE to scrutinize federal spending. That is the role and context reported at the time; the cited stories do not establish his employment status after February 2025.
What was reported about the account
The Journal characterized the deleted account as advocating racism and eugenics. Gizmodo relayed examples attributed by the Journal to the account, including racist statements and comments about India, immigration and Gaza. Those statements should be understood as posts from an account allegedly linked to Elez, not as independently verified quotations from him.
#1 Best Overall
The available reporting establishes a reported connection between Elez and the account, not independent authentication of the account’s authorship. That distinction matters when describing the posts or the reason for the resignation: the Journal reported that he resigned after it asked the White House about the connection.
Who is Marko Elez?
At the time of the Journal’s report, Elez was 25 and a DOGE staff member involved in scrutiny of federal spending. Gizmodo reported that he had previously worked at X and SpaceX and had graduated from Rutgers.

What Treasury access did the reporting describe?
The Journal reported that Elez had gained access to Treasury’s central-payments system. That establishes access as part of the contemporaneous account, but does not specify the duration or full scope of his permissions. Gizmodo discussed disputes at the time over whether DOGE access was limited to read-only and litigation concerning access to the payment systems; those disputes mean the report should not be treated as proof of what every DOGE staffer could do.
