How to Follow Brazilian Politics Without Speaking Portuguese

A practical English-language guide to tracking Brazil’s elections, Congress and political news, and verifying claims against official sources.

You can follow Brazilian politics in English by combining Brazil’s official election and congressional sources with English-language news and independent monitoring. Use official sources to confirm rules, results, bills and votes; use journalism and observatories to understand developments and context. For consequential claims, check the relevant original source.

Start with Brazil’s electoral authority for elections

The Superior Electoral Court, usually called the TSE, is the official starting point for election rules, process and validated results. Its English-language portal brings together election information, statistics, news and resources about disinformation. The TSE says the electoral courts administer, supervise and conduct elections. Its Election Process in Brazil explainer is useful for understanding how the system works.

When an election is underway, distinguish early reporting from an official result. News reports and election dashboards can make results easier to follow, but they are not the authority that validates them. Google says its Brazil election feature uses TSE data compiled from Regional Electoral Courts, and that final results become definitive after validation by Electoral Justice. For the authoritative result, follow the TSE’s own information through its English portal.

Use Congress’s English resources to track legislation

Brazil’s National Congress has two houses: the Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Senate. A bill, vote or committee action belongs to a particular house, so check which body is responsible before drawing conclusions about its status.

Chamber of Deputies

The Chamber’s English overview of the National Congress explains the institution and parliamentary calendar. Use it for background, then look for current Chamber records when following a specific bill or vote.

Federal Senate

The Senate’s English services information points readers to Senate news, senators’ official activity pages and video. Those official pages are more useful than a translated news summary when you need to establish what a senator or the chamber actually did.

Add English-language reporting and election monitoring

Official pages establish institutional facts, but they may not explain why a development matters. For reporting in English, consult Agência Brasil’s politics section. It is a Brazilian public news service, and its coverage can help readers follow current developments and explanations.

For an election-monitoring perspective, the Washington Brazil Office’s International Observatory on Brazil’s 2026 Elections describes a civil-society monitoring mission and a collaboration with The Brazilian Report for election content in English and Portuguese. Treat it as monitoring and analysis, not as the body certifying results. Check consequential factual claims against the TSE or the relevant legislative record.

Match each source to the question you need answered

Source Best for Check
TSE, Brazil’s electoral authority Election rules, process, statistics and official results When the page or data was updated, and whether a result is preliminary or validated
Chamber of Deputies or Federal Senate House-specific bills, votes, committees and member activity Which house or committee is responsible, and whether the record is current
Agência Brasil Timely news and accessible explanations Publication date, reporting and links to documents or officials
Washington Brazil Office observatory and The Brazilian Report collaboration Election monitoring and a civil-society perspective The observatory’s stated role; verify factual claims with primary sources

These sources have different jobs rather than a single ranking. The evidence here supports evaluating authority, access to primary documents, timeliness and explanatory or monitoring role; it does not establish a comprehensive left-to-right bias score for every outlet.

Use translation carefully when English coverage runs out

The TSE maintains a Portuguese-language elections portal alongside its English resources. Original documents and Portuguese reporting can provide detail that has not been translated. A Portuguese-English dictionary can help with political vocabulary, but words may carry context or connotations that a direct translation misses.

  1. Open the official Portuguese page or document and identify the passage relevant to your question.
  2. Translate that passage for orientation, using a dictionary or translation tool as an aid rather than as the final authority.
  3. For an important claim, verify names, dates and figures against the original source and compare the meaning with an official English explanation or a reliable report.
  4. When wording itself matters, such as a legal provision or public statement, avoid treating a machine translation as a verbatim English quotation.

Keep fast-changing details tied to their dates

Election calendars, candidates, polling, live results, officeholders, party alignments and legislative activity can change quickly. Check the date on the source and use current official pages for live or time-sensitive claims rather than relying on an older guide or an undated summary.

For example, the TSE reported that by June 2026 more than 141 million voters—around 89% of the electorate able to vote—had fingerprints registered through its biometric system. That is a dated TSE figure, not an undated measure of the current electorate. The TSE’s 2022 guide for foreigners describes a legislature of 81 senators and 513 deputies; because it predates current composition, treat it as background rather than a current roster. The guide is available as a 2022 PDF.

For a low-friction routine, read English reporting for developments, use the relevant house’s own records for congressional actions, and check the TSE for election process and results. That separation makes it easier to follow the story without mistaking interpretation or early reporting for an official record.
