You can buy ether (ETH), Ethereum’s native cryptocurrency, through a cryptocurrency exchange that serves your location. The usual process is to verify an account, add a supported payment method, choose ETH, review the full order quote and fees, and confirm. Before buying, decide whether to leave the ETH with the exchange or take responsibility for storing it in a self-custody wallet.

What you are buying

“Ether (ETH) is the native cryptocurrency that powers the Ethereum network,” according to ethereum.org. ETH is not the Ethereum network itself, nor is it the same as other tokens that may run on Ethereum. ETH is used to pay network transaction fees and can also be used for staking.

Where to buy ETH

A centralized cryptocurrency exchange is a common way to make a first purchase. Which exchanges and payment methods are available depends on your country or state. Ethereum.org’s directory of ways to get ETH can help you explore options, but it is informational rather than an endorsement, and services may change the locations they serve.

For any exchange, check that it accepts customers in your jurisdiction and supports a payment method you can use. Then compare the complete purchase preview, account recovery options, how the exchange holds assets, and whether you can withdraw ETH and what charges may apply. The available information does not establish a universally best exchange or a current, like-for-like fee ranking.

How to buy ETH on an exchange

Exact screens and requirements vary by provider. Kraken’s documented process is one example, not a promise that its service or every listed funding option is available where you live.

  1. Create an account and complete verification. Follow the exchange’s current identity-verification steps.
  2. Add a supported payment method. Available options depend on the provider and your location; Kraken lists several possibilities on its ETH purchase page.
  3. Choose ETH. In Kraken’s example, select “Buy Crypto” and choose Ethereum (ETH).
  4. Enter the amount. You may enter a cash amount or an ETH amount, depending on the provider’s interface.
  5. Review the order preview before confirming. Check the exchange rate, how much ETH you will receive, all listed fees and the total charge. Confirm only if the details match your expectations.

Check the full cost before confirming

The displayed ETH price alone may not represent the total cost of a purchase. Coinbase says its purchase details show the payment method, exchange rate, Ethereum network fee where applicable, Coinbase fees and transaction total. Kraken likewise advises customers to review the price, amount and fees before placing an order.

Fees and quoted prices can vary by provider, payment method, location and time. There is no single fee or current ETH price that applies to every buyer. Read the final preview for your specific order rather than relying on a headline price or a fee figure from another customer’s transaction.

Choose where to keep your ETH

Buying ETH and deciding who controls access to it are separate choices. If you leave ETH in an exchange account, the provider controls custody and its account systems affect access and recovery. That may be simpler to manage, but it creates dependence on the provider.

With self-custody, you control the wallet’s keys and are responsible for keeping them and any recovery material safe. Ethereum.org warns that a lost seed phrase can make a wallet unrecoverable. It also explains that cryptocurrency transactions cannot simply be reversed after they are made. The SEC’s Crypto Asset Custody Basics for Retail Investors outlines custody considerations and suggests asking a custodian about applicable asset-based, transaction, transfer, setup and closing fees. The bulletin is educational information, not a Commission rule or regulation.

If you choose self-custody

A hardware wallet is an optional physical device that keeps private keys offline; it is not required to buy ETH. Using one does not eliminate the need to protect its recovery phrase. Review Ethereum.org’s security and scam-prevention guidance before setting up a wallet, and read its wallet guide for information on buying, storing and sending crypto.
