Can You Trust AI to Pick Stocks or Manage Your Money?

AI can generate stock ideas, but that does not make them reliable predictions. Learn how robo-advisers work and what to verify before trusting one with your money.

Not by default. Treat AI-generated stock ideas as unverified information, not a reliable prediction or personalized recommendation. A robo-adviser is different: it is a digital advisory service that typically gathers information about your goals and risk tolerance, then builds and manages a portfolio. Its usefulness depends on its design, assumptions, fees, and fit for your circumstances—not on the label “AI.”

AI stock picks and robo-advisers are not the same

AI stock-picking claims

A chatbot or trading system may claim it can identify winning stocks or forecast prices. The SEC, NASAA, and FINRA caution that AI-generated information can be inaccurate, outdated, misleading, or fabricated. Its output may draw on faulty inputs, including manipulated material, and even accurate inputs can produce a wrong answer. A confident-sounding explanation is not proof that a prediction is sound.

Do not make an investment decision based on a chatbot response alone. Check the underlying information against reliable sources and consult more than one source. The joint SEC, NASAA, and FINRA 2024 investor alert specifically warns against relying on AI-generated information to predict market direction or a security’s price.

Robo-advisers

A robo-adviser is an automated digital investment advisory service. It generally asks about factors such as goals, time horizon, income, assets, and risk tolerance, then uses the answers to recommend or manage a portfolio. Services differ: some use preset portfolios or a limited menu of investments, such as broad exchange-traded funds. Automation can make portfolio management more accessible, but it does not establish that the service can predict winning stocks or guarantee gains. See the Investor.gov definition and the SEC’s robo-adviser bulletin.

Why an automated recommendation may not fit you

A tool’s recommendation reflects the questions it asks, the information you provide, the assumptions it makes, and the investments it is allowed to choose. A missing or mistaken answer can change the result. A tool may also leave out personal circumstances that matter to your decision.

Before relying on a recommendation, consider whether it accounts for your:

  • Other investments and assets, as well as debts.
  • Goals, time horizon, and need for access to cash.
  • Tax situation and willingness to withstand investment losses.

The SEC and FINRA’s guidance on automated investment tools explains why assumptions, limited investment choices, and incomplete personal information can affect recommendations. A service designed for a specific goal may not address your broader financial needs.

What to check before choosing a robo-adviser

Compare services on their actual disclosures, not on claims that they use advanced AI. Features and fees vary and can change, so review the current terms for the service you are considering.

What to compare Questions to ask
Purpose and suitability Is the service built for your goal or for broader financial needs? Does it account for the assets, debts, cash needs, time horizon, and risk tolerance that matter to you?
Method and investment choices What information does it collect? What assumptions does it use? Which investments can it select, and what does it disclose about rebalancing or behavior in stressed markets?
Total cost and incentives What is the advisory fee, and what additional fund expenses, trading costs, subscription charges, or transaction fees could apply? Does the sponsor receive compensation for recommending particular investments or services? The SEC’s subscription-based advisory fees bulletin offers further questions about fee arrangements.
Human support and exit Can you speak with an investment professional, or is support limited to technical help? How can you end the service, and what happens to your investments if you leave?
Registration and identity In the United States, can you verify the adviser’s registration and disciplinary history through SEC Investment Adviser Public Disclosure (IAPD)? Can you independently confirm that a message or offer really comes from the firm?
Privacy and security What personal information is collected, how is it used, and with whom may it be shared? Do not give account credentials to an unsolicited service or contact.

Registration is a check on an adviser’s status and record, not a guarantee of performance. The SEC’s robo-adviser bulletin discusses questions to consider when assessing a service.

Watch for AI investment scams

The SEC, NASAA, and FINRA’s January 25, 2024 alert describes scammers promoting unregistered or unlicensed AI trading systems with unrealistic promises. Claims of guaranteed winners, a system that cannot lose, or high returns with little or no risk are warning signs. Verify a professional, firm, exchange, or platform independently before sending money. Be particularly cautious about microcap stock promotions and unsolicited investment pitches.

The cited investor-protection guidance does not establish that AI stock-picking systems outperform the market. Treat performance claims as claims to verify, not evidence that a tool can predict prices.

What if you live outside the United States?

IAPD is a U.S. resource. If you are elsewhere, check registration and investor-protection information with your own securities regulator, and review the service’s local disclosures, fees, and legal responsibilities.
