Choose the card whose current 5% categories match purchases you already expect to make, then check its activation requirement, quarterly cap, and merchant-eligibility rules. For Q4 2026, Chase Freedom Flex lists grocery stores, dining, and American Red Cross donations; Discover it Cash Back lists restaurants, entertainment, and utilities. Neither schedule is permanent, and a purchase that seems to fit a category may not qualify if the merchant or payment route is coded differently.
How rotating 5% cash-back categories work
A rotating-category card offers an elevated rate on selected types of purchases for a limited period, usually a quarter. The categories and eligible merchants can change from one quarter to the next, and different issuers do not necessarily use the same schedule. The 5% rate is conditional: you may need to activate the offer, purchases count only up to a cap, and the issuer must recognize the transaction as eligible.
For Q4 2026, Chase announced grocery stores, dining, and American Red Cross donations for Freedom and Freedom Flex cardmembers. Discover’s calendar lists restaurants, entertainment, and utilities for October 1 through December 31, 2026. These are quarter-specific examples, not promises about later quarters. Check your account’s current calendar and terms before relying on a category.
Compare the Q4 2026 schedules and caps
| Card | Q4 2026 categories | Activation and cap | Rate outside the 5% categories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chase Freedom Flex | Grocery stores, dining, and American Red Cross donations, according to Chase’s Q4 2026 announcement. | Quarterly activation is required. The card page states a $1,500 combined-purchase cap for rotating categories per quarter. See Chase’s current card terms. | 1% on other purchases, according to Chase’s card page. |
| Discover it Cash Back | Restaurants, entertainment, and utilities for October 1–December 31, 2026, according to the Discover 2026 calendar. | Activation is required; the calendar states up to $1,500 in category purchases per quarter. Confirm the specific account’s eligibility and terms. | 1% outside activated 5% categories, according to Discover’s product page. |
At a 5% rate, $1,500 of eligible purchases produces at most $75 in rewards at that rate for the quarter; that is the arithmetic of the issuer-published cap and rate. Spending above the cap earns the card’s other applicable rate, rather than an additional 5% on those purchases. For Freedom Flex, Chase says eligible dining purchases may also receive the card’s standard dining reward while dining is a quarterly category, subject to applicable caps.

Choose based on spending you already plan to do
Start with your expected purchases for the quarter, not the largest-looking category list. Match them against each issuer’s current schedule, then estimate how much of that spending is likely to qualify before the cap. Do not buy extra items just to earn a reward: the return is a percentage of spending, and an unnecessary purchase can cost more than the cash back it generates.
For Q4 2026, a person expecting eligible grocery or dining purchases may find Chase’s schedule a better match; someone expecting eligible restaurant, entertainment, or utility purchases may find Discover’s schedule more useful. Restaurants and dining sound similar, but the issuer’s category definitions and merchant coding—not the everyday wording alone—determine eligibility. The better fit depends on your own eligible spending and account terms, not a universal ranking.

Confirm activation, dates, and transaction timing
Both examples require quarterly activation. Chase says cardmembers can activate through its online, app, phone, in-person, or email channels; check the account for the available method and complete activation before relying on the bonus. Discover’s Q4 calendar says the qualifying transaction date must be on or before the offer’s last day. For an online purchase, the merchant’s transaction date may be the shipping date rather than the date you placed the order. Allow time for activation and processing instead of assuming an order date controls.
Keep the calendar’s exact quarter dates in view. A category appearing in one quarter does not establish that it will appear in the next, and a transaction after the offer period may miss the bonus even if you placed the order earlier.

Check what counts as an eligible purchase
Issuers rely on merchant category codes and transaction information. A business may sell goods associated with a listed category but be classified under another code, so its purchases might not earn the bonus. Similarly, a third-party payment account or digital wallet can obscure transaction details or category data and prevent a purchase from qualifying. Chase and Discover both warn that a merchant that appears to fit a category is not guaranteed to qualify.
- Review the issuer’s category terms and exclusions rather than judging only by a store’s products or name.
- Where practical, pay the merchant directly instead of routing a purchase through a third-party payment service.
- Do not count a transaction toward the cap or expected reward until it is clear that the issuer treats it as eligible.
Compare terms beyond the headline rate
The two examples are useful comparisons of category rotation, but the issuer pages cited here do not establish a complete comparison of annual percentage rates, fees, credit eligibility, or every card benefit. Review the current disclosures for the account you are considering. Discover’s product page also advertises an automatic first-year Cashback Match for new cardmembers; treat it as an applicant-specific offer feature and verify the terms shown when applying.
