For Chase Freedom Flex, activation is required each quarter; the steps and rules below describe Chase’s program and should not be assumed to apply to other cards.
How to activate a rotating-category offer
- Find the current offer. Sign in to the card issuer’s website or app and open the rotating-category or bonus offer section. Check the quarter’s exact start and end dates, categories, and activation deadline. For Freedom Flex, Chase also supports activation by phone, in person, or email; see its Freedom Flex program information for current options. Chase says it may send reminders, but do not rely on a reminder in place of checking your account.
- Activate the offer. Complete the issuer’s activation process for that quarter and save the confirmation or note its date. Chase requires quarterly activation for this offer; do not assume an earlier quarter’s activation carries forward.
- Record the rules that matter. Note the category names, the qualifying dates, the activation deadline, and any combined spending cap. Keep the issuer’s terms handy for merchant exclusions or special channel requirements.
For Chase Freedom Flex, the described offer is 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined eligible quarterly category purchases, subject to activation and the program terms. That rate and cap are specific to this offer, not a general rule for rotating-category cards.
How to track category spending and rewards
Use the issuer’s rewards display
Chase says category earnings can be reviewed in Chase Ultimate Rewards. Check the account periodically after purchases post, rather than assuming that a purchase qualifies based only on what you bought or where you shopped.
Keep a simple quarter-by-quarter record
A note or spreadsheet can help you keep track of the quarter, activation confirmation and date, eligible categories, relevant purchases, and progress toward the combined cap. A separate tracker is optional; the issuer account remains the place to confirm how a transaction was classified and what rewards were credited.

Reconcile purchases after posting
Keep receipts or transaction records for purchases that matter to your cap. After a charge posts, check whether it appears under the expected category and whether its rewards are reflected. If the classification looks wrong, contact the issuer with the transaction details and ask how it was coded.
What makes a purchase eligible—and why a bonus may not appear
Category eligibility depends on merchant coding and transaction processing, not just the item or service described on a receipt. A merchant’s payment route may use a different code from the one you expect. Third-party payment accounts and mobile or wireless processing routes can also affect whether a purchase qualifies; Chase’s rewards agreement explains its coding and processing conditions.

- Check the merchant and payment path. If a third-party account or intermediary handles the charge, it may not be coded as the underlying merchant category.
- Read category-specific conditions. Some offers specify a required channel. Chase’s Q3 2026 announcement, for example, said United Way donations had to be made through United Way’s official channels to qualify.
- Allow for processing and submission timing. Chase’s rewards agreement says a merchant must submit the charge by the final day of the relevant calendar quarter. A purchase made close to quarter-end may not qualify if it is submitted too late, so do not count on it until it posts and the account reflects its treatment.
- Ask before relying on an ambiguous transaction. If a merchant, processor, or purchase route is unclear, contact the issuer before making the purchase if the bonus is important to your decision.
Chase Freedom Flex: 2026 category calendar example
Chase’s 2026 category calendar listed the following categories in the version available for the year. The calendar showed Q4 as “Coming Soon” and said activation would start September 15; it did not provide Q4 categories in that version, so no Q4 list is included here.
| Quarter | Categories listed by Chase | Dates or activation details stated |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 2026 | Norwegian Cruise Line; dining; American Heart Association | Category names listed; the cited calendar details here do not state the quarter’s activation deadline. |
| Q2 2026 | Amazon; Chase Travel; Feeding America | Category names listed; the cited calendar details here do not state the quarter’s activation deadline. |
| Q3 2026 | Gas stations; public transit; EV charging; select live entertainment; United Way | July 1–September 30, 2026; activation deadline September 14, 2026. |
| Q4 2026 | Not stated; the calendar showed “Coming Soon.” | Calendar said activation would start September 15; category list not stated. |
For Q3 2026, Chase’s announcement gave examples of public transit including trains, buses, ferries, toll bridges and highways, and parking lots and garages. Select live entertainment examples included concerts, sporting events, zoos, and amusement parks. Those examples are not a substitute for the full merchant list and terms. The announcement’s statement from Wittney Rachlin, General Manager of Chase Freedom, described the categories as intended to reward routine summer spending; that is issuer commentary, not evidence that every cardholder will earn a particular amount.

How to compare rotating-category cards
If you are deciding between cards, compare the rules and tracking experience rather than focusing on the headline bonus rate alone:
- Whether activation is required, how to activate, and the deadline.
- How far in advance categories are announced and how predictable they are.
- The bonus rate and the cap on eligible spending.
- Merchant definitions, processing rules, and exclusions.
- Where the issuer displays category earnings and how easy it is to reconcile purchases.
- The card’s regular earn rate when your planned spending does not match a bonus category.
These criteria help you assess fit; they do not make one card universally best. Check the current terms for the specific card and quarter before planning spending around a bonus.
