What’s actually slowing this PC down?

You can use AI to help with a budget or explain a charge without handing over your bank credentials or an unredacted statement. Start with the least sensitive version of your question, share only the information the task requires, and check the specific service’s privacy settings before submitting personal data. A chat window is not, by itself, a promise of confidentiality.
Is it safe to put a bank statement into an AI tool?
Not automatically. A statement can reveal far more than the amount you want help understanding: your name, account details, address, tax identifiers, reference numbers, and a pattern of transactions. Whether a particular service stores or uses what you submit depends on that provider’s terms, settings, plan, and account environment. Check those details before sharing a real document.
For many questions, you can get useful help without sharing the statement at all. Ask how to organize expenses, explain a type of fee, or build a budget using fictional figures. If real figures are necessary, provide only the relevant excerpt or totals, and remove identifying details first.
What should you keep out of a prompt?
As a practical default, do not enter information that could identify you, access an account, or expose a sensitive financial record unless the task genuinely requires it and you are authorized to use that service for the information.
#1 Best Overall
- Bank account and payment card numbers
- Passwords, PINs, authentication codes, and banking login details
- Tax identifiers and other government-issued identification numbers
- Unredacted statements, bills, tax documents, or account records
- Names, addresses, reference numbers, QR codes, and barcodes from financial documents
- Transaction descriptions or combinations of dates and amounts that could identify you or disclose sensitive activity
This is practical advice based on data-minimization principles, not a regulator-issued checklist. Canadian privacy commissioners recommend using anonymized or de-identified information in prompts where possible and limiting unnecessary use of personal information. See the Canadian privacy commissioners’ principles for generative AI.
How to get useful help while sharing less
Start with a fictional or generalized example
Instead of pasting a live transaction, ask: “How should I categorize a monthly fee of about $15?” For a budget, use rounded totals or broad ranges rather than exact income, account balances, and identifiable spending details. A synthetic example often lets the AI explain a method without receiving your real financial information.

Share only the relevant portion
If a real document is needed, keep the smallest excerpt that answers the question. Remove your name, account and card numbers, address, tax identifiers, reference numbers, QR codes, and barcodes. Consider removing transaction details that are not relevant or could identify you. Redaction is useful only if the identifying information is actually removed from what you submit; simply covering text visually may not remove it from a file.
Check authorization before sharing someone else’s information
If the information belongs to a client, customer, family member, or employer, do not upload it just because the tool is convenient. Confirm you are authorized to use the service with that data and follow the applicable organization’s rules for approved tools and confidential information. Canadian guidance specifically says sensitive or confidential information should be entered only where authorized.

Do AI tools use your chats to train their models?
There is no single answer for every AI service. The Australian privacy regulator warns that some commercial AI products have terms or settings that allow customer inputs to be collected for further training and development. That does not establish that every provider uses every prompt this way; it means you should check the exact product, plan, and current settings rather than assume your chat is excluded.
Before sharing personal financial information, look for clear answers to these questions in the service’s privacy notice and account settings:
Rank #4
- Can prompts or uploaded files be used to train or improve models?
- How long are chats and files retained, and what deletion controls are available?
- Can people review conversations, and who can access them?
- Does the service offer a temporary-chat option or a private or enterprise environment with different controls?
Settings and terms can vary by provider and change over time. The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner’s guidance on privacy and commercially available AI products discusses these data practices in the Australian context. For questions about legal rights or obligations, consult the rules that apply in your jurisdiction and the specific service terms.

A conversation can contain personal and financial details even when it is not a formal account record. The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s 2023 report, Chatbots in consumer finance, says chat logs should be considered sensitive consumer information and secured. It also warns that chat logs create another venue for privacy attacks, making it harder to protect consumers’ personal and financial information.

The report recounts a historical 2018 Ticketmaster UK chatbot-related incident involving malicious code targeting Inbenta Technologies’ service. It says 9.4 million data subjects were affected, including 60,000 individual payment card details. These figures describe that incident; they are not a current estimate of risk from AI tools or a measure of how likely a consumer’s prompt is to be exposed.
Choose a tool and account environment for the information
When comparing services, focus on data handling rather than assuming a familiar brand or conversational interface is private. Review the prompt-training terms, retention and deletion controls, access restrictions, and whether an appropriately protected private or enterprise environment is available. For work or client information, use only a tool and account environment approved for that purpose.
Financial-sector guidance from Japan and Taiwan also addresses controls for financial institutions, but those materials do not establish the same consumer rights or obligations in every country. Legal requirements depend on jurisdiction, service, and context; do not treat institution-facing guidance as a universal rule for individual users.
Verify the financial answer separately
Privacy controls do not make an AI-generated financial answer accurate. Check calculations against your own records and confirm consequential tax, credit, investment, or banking decisions with authoritative sources or a qualified professional. The privacy guidance cited here concerns information handling; it does not establish the accuracy of AI financial advice.
