What to Do When an AI Chatbot Gives Dangerous Advice

If an AI chatbot gives advice that could cause harm, don’t follow it. Step away, involve a trusted person or qualified professional, and seek emergency help if anyone is in immediate danger.

Do not follow advice that could harm you, another person, or any living thing. Stop the chat if it is distressing or seems to reinforce the advice, and contact a trusted person or qualified professional. If anyone is in immediate danger, call local emergency services. For a mental-health crisis in the United States, call 911 or call or text 988; elsewhere, use your local crisis or emergency service.

First, stop and get human support

The American Psychological Association (APA) says in its June 2026 Guide to Navigating AI-Generated Advice Thoughtfully and Safely: “Any advice from AI that points toward harm to yourself, others, or anything living is a clear signal to step away.” Do not test the suggestion, follow its instructions, or keep asking the chatbot to justify them. Close the conversation if continuing feels upsetting or appears to strengthen the harmful message.

Tell someone you trust what is happening. If the advice concerns health, safety, money, or another consequential decision, bring the specific question to an appropriately qualified human rather than treating the chatbot’s answer as a decision. A confident tone does not prove that an answer is accurate: the APA cautions that AI can sound sure while being wrong and lacks a mental-health professional’s clinical judgment and contextual understanding.

When the situation may be a crisis

Do not try to resolve an immediate crisis by fact-checking the chatbot or continuing the conversation. The APA advises immediate human help if someone is thinking about harming themselves or another person, feels an urge to self-harm, is experiencing hallucinations, or has strongly distressing beliefs. It says, “Important: Do not rely on AI in a crisis.”

  • In the United States: Call 911, call or text 988, or go to the nearest emergency department.
  • Outside the United States: Contact your local emergency number or crisis service. The numbers above are US-specific.

If you are with someone who may be in immediate danger, stay with them if it is safe to do so and help connect them with emergency or crisis support. A chatbot is not a substitute for licensed mental-health care.

For concerning advice that is not an immediate emergency

Verify consequential claims with a suitable human source

Do not make a major decision solely on chatbot output. For medical or mental-health questions, consult a qualified clinician; for other high-stakes issues, seek a professional with relevant expertise and check authoritative information. If you cannot verify a claim, treat that uncertainty as a reason to pause rather than act.

Decide whether to report the output

If it is safe and useful, use the service’s own current reporting, feedback, or safety contact options. The available route depends on the provider; there is no single provider-independent consumer reporting channel established by the sources cited here. Do not assume a report will lead to a particular response or outcome. The Federal Trade Commission’s 2025 inquiry sought information from seven chatbot companies about safety practices, disclosures, enforcement of rules, and data handling; those seven were inquiry recipients, not a measure of how often harmful advice occurs or proof that a particular service is unsafe. See the FTC announcement.

Keep any record focused

If you need to document the exchange for a professional or report, preserve only what is useful, such as the relevant text and service name. Avoid sending extra sensitive personal details. The APA notes that providers may store or share information, including conversation data, so review the service’s current privacy information before submitting more.

Why a chatbot answer needs a safety check

AI risk is not limited to whether a sentence sounds plausible. Reliability, accuracy, robustness, context, and the possible severity of an error all matter when deciding how much weight to give an answer. NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework is a voluntary framework for managing AI risks across design, development, use, and evaluation; it is not a personal crisis-response procedure, and NIST says the framework is being revised.

For health misinformation during emergencies, WHO/Europe’s operational toolkit addresses institutional work such as social listening, coordination, and risk communication. It is not personal medical advice or a chatbot complaint channel. For an individual facing harmful advice, the immediate priorities remain human help, a qualified check of consequential claims, and provider-specific reporting only if appropriate.
