Before enrolling, check how prices can change, whether delivery charges are separate, and what it would cost to leave your current plan. Rules and available offers vary by location, so confirm details with your local regulator or an independent comparison tool.
Start with your household’s actual usage
Gather recent bills and record electricity and natural-gas consumption separately. Note the period covered, your current unit rates, and any daily, monthly, or annual fixed charges. Using your own figures makes comparisons more relevant than relying on a supplier’s typical-household estimate.
When arranging a switch, Ofgem says UK customers may need their current supplier and tariff, price per kilowatt-hour, and annual usage. Ofgem’s switching guidance describes the information for its process; requirements elsewhere may differ.
Compare the total cost for the same usage and period
Estimate electricity and gas costs separately, then compare each offer over the same time horizon and consumption. Include every relevant charge and discount rather than ranking plans by a headline rate. The European Commission advises consumers to compare the total price for estimated annual consumption and identify price components and one-off payments.

- Energy unit rates and standing, daily, monthly, or other fixed charges.
- Distribution or network charges, taxes, and levies, including charges that remain payable to a utility.
- Recurring fees, one-time payments, and any costs for equipment or bundled services.
- Discounts, including their duration and conditions, such as direct debit, paperless billing, or taking another service.
Ask how the supplier calculated its estimate and whether it includes all applicable charges. Ontario Energy Board guidance notes that Ontario customers with an energy retailer contract still pay utility delivery charges. That arrangement is specific to its market; check your local rules and bill structure. See the Ontario Energy Board’s energy-contract guidance and the European Commission’s advice before signing a new energy contract.
Find out how the price can change
Identify whether the plan is fixed, variable, dynamic, indexed, or a mix. The word “fixed” on an offer does not, by itself, establish that every bill component will stay unchanged. Read the contract to see which prices are fixed, which can move, what triggers a change, how often it can happen, and what notice the supplier must give. For an indexed plan, find out which index applies and how you can follow it.

Read the contract and calculate the cost of leaving
Check the contract length and end date, renewal terms, cancellation process, and any cooling-off period or early-exit fee. Confirm whether a discount is temporary or conditional, and whether payment method or billing choices affect eligibility. Also check how often you will be billed and whether bills use estimated or actual meter readings.
Before switching, compare any fee for leaving your current plan with the expected savings over the period you intend to stay on the new one. Ofgem says UK customers may have to pay an exit fee for leaving a fixed-rate tariff early; Ontario Energy Board guidance also recommends reviewing exit and cancellation conditions. Fees and consumer protections vary by contract and jurisdiction, so consult your current terms and local regulator. Ofgem and the Ontario Energy Board provide guidance for their respective markets.

Use a comparison tool that applies to your address
Use an independent or regulator-backed service where one is available, and confirm that it includes the suppliers and offers open to your address. Check when rates were last updated and whether the tool accounts for your actual usage and all relevant charges. The European Commission recommends: “Use your national independent comparison tool where available before signing a new energy contract.” Ohio’s Energy Choice service provides an apples-to-apples tool for consumers eligible for that program; eligibility is local. Consult the European Commission guidance or Energy Choice Ohio’s switching information.
If renewable-energy options or customer-service quality matter to you, compare those too, using reliable information available in your market. Do not assume that a low estimated bill or a provider’s marketing claim alone establishes which plan is best for your needs.

Know what switching changes in your area
Retail arrangements differ. In some markets, changing retailer changes the billing or supply contract while the same network continues delivering energy. The Australian Energy Regulator says customers retain the same electricity and gas supply to the property after changing retailers. That is not a universal rule: ask your local regulator what changes, who handles outages, and which charges remain with the network or utility. See the Australian Energy Regulator’s energy-services guidance.

Switching timelines, eligibility, cancellation rights, and fees depend on location and contract. For example, Ofgem says suppliers must switch the supply within five working days under the process described on its UK page. The Australian Energy Regulator describes a 10-business-day cancellation right in the relevant context. These are jurisdiction-specific statements, not general deadlines or rights. Check the current guidance from your own regulator before enrolling, and confirm who will manage the switch and when the new terms begin.
