On September 27, 2024, a contemporaneous AOL Finance roundup reported a leading high-yield savings account offer of up to 5.33% APY. The FDIC’s September 2024 national savings rate was 0.46%. Those figures describe different things: one is a reported leading offer; the other is a national benchmark, not the highest rate available to savers.

What savings rates were reported on September 27, 2024?

Figure What it measures Source and scope
Up to 5.33% APY Leading reported high-yield savings offer AOL Finance’s roundup dated September 27, 2024; a secondary market report, not a guarantee of availability or an FDIC average. The account name, balance conditions and eligibility behind the reported maximum are not established in the roundup. AOL Finance

The 5.33% APY is a dated headline figure, not a promise that an account was open to every saver or that the rate would continue after account opening. Savings APYs are variable. The FDIC’s 0.46% rate is a national benchmark and should not be read as the best offer a customer could find.

Why the 5.33% offer and 0.46% national rate are not directly comparable

The AOL Finance roundup reported a leading advertised offer. The FDIC series serves a different purpose: its September 2024 savings figure uses a $2,500 product tier and a national-rate methodology. The FDIC table’s update date was September 16, rather than September 27. Differences in source, timing and measurement mean the figures are useful side by side as context, but they are not a like-for-like contest between two offers.

Historical bank-rate indexes can have yet another scope. Bankrate describes its index as a weekly survey of ten large banks and thrifts across ten large U.S. markets. Its deposit APYs assume a new customer opening a standalone account at the minimum amount needed to open the account and earn interest. That survey is distinct both from a reported market-leading offer and from the FDIC’s national rate. Bankrate savings rate methodology and rates

What to check when comparing savings accounts

APY is only one part of the decision. A high advertised rate may depend on conditions, and a fee or balance threshold can reduce the value of an account. Bankrate’s comparison methodology considers APY, monthly fees, minimum deposit requirements and access to funds; eligibility and withdrawal arrangements also matter when deciding whether an account fits your needs.

  • APY and rate terms: Confirm the current APY with the provider and whether it is variable. Do not assume a historical advertised rate remains available.
  • Opening deposit and balance requirements: Check what is required to open the account and whether a balance threshold applies to earning the advertised rate.
  • Fees: Review recurring monthly fees and the conditions for avoiding them.
  • Access to funds: Check the available withdrawal and transfer arrangements and whether they suit how you plan to use the savings.
  • Eligibility: Verify that you can open the account under the provider’s requirements.

How to use this historical rate snapshot

Use September 27, 2024 as the date for the reported 5.33% APY, not as an indication of rates available today. Before opening any account, consult the provider’s current disclosures for its APY, fees, balance conditions, access rules and eligibility. The historical roundup does not identify enough provider-specific detail to confirm which named account, if any, offered the reported maximum to a particular customer.
