For April 18, 2024, the clearest benchmark is the FDIC’s 0.46% national savings deposit rate, published three days earlier. That was an average—not the best rate a saver could find. Online savings offers were much higher around that period, but the available evidence does not establish which account had the highest APY on April 18 itself.
What did “today’s best savings rates” mean on April 18, 2024?
In this dated title, “today” means April 18, 2024, not the current day. The FDIC reported a 0.46% national savings deposit rate on April 15. The figure is a national benchmark based on reported institution data, not a ranking of consumer offers or a rate available from every bank. The FDIC’s savings-account rate uses its $2,500 product tier and, under its post-2021 methodology, weights reported data by domestic deposits and includes insured banks and credit unions. See the FDIC’s April 2024 national rates table.
The exact highest savings APY and the provider offering it on April 18 have not been established here. A national average and selected online-bank offers describe different parts of the market, so they should not be treated as directly competing account rates.
How high were online savings rates around that date?
As nearby-period context—not as a verified April 18 rate list—the Associated Press reported on April 24, 2024, that several online banks still offered yields of 5.25%. The article also said DepositAccounts.com had identified 5.55% as the highest online yield as of April 1. The 5.55% observation predates the title date, while the AP article itself postdates it; neither figure proves which account led on April 18. Read the Associated Press’s April 24 report.

The gap between the FDIC’s 0.46% national average and online offers around 5% reflects differing measures: one is a deposit-weighted national benchmark, and the others are rates offered by selected institutions. AP quoted deposit-rate analyst Ken Tumin describing the period’s divide: “brick-and-mortar bank deposit rates continue to be slow in their movement higher,” while noting that “they are still very low compared to online rates.” That was a comment in AP’s April 2024 reporting, not a statement about rates today.
Why the highest advertised APY is not the whole comparison
Savings APYs are variable, and a headline rate may depend on eligibility or account conditions. For an individual account, a useful comparison would verify these terms in a dated provider disclosure:
Rank #2
- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
- Ongoing APY and rate conditions: Check whether the rate applies to the full balance or only a tier, and whether it depends on qualifying activity.
- Fees and minimums: Confirm any monthly fee, opening deposit requirement, or minimum balance needed to earn the advertised rate.
- Access to funds: Consider how transfers and withdrawals work and whether access fits the purpose of the savings.
- Deposit protection: Verify applicable FDIC or NCUA coverage for the institution and account.
No account-specific April 18 terms are established here, so assigning a provider, APY, minimum, fee, or eligibility condition to that date would risk presenting an unverified historical offer as fact.

This page answers a question about April 18, 2024; it is not a current offer list. As a later point of comparison, the FDIC’s April 2026 table reports a 0.38% national savings rate. That is a 2026 benchmark—not an October 2026 account offer—and illustrates why historical rates should not be read as current availability. View the FDIC’s April 2026 national rates table. For a decision today, check current provider disclosures and compare their conditions alongside APY.
