Fresh Start Produce Sales recalled certain whole cucumbers shipped in bulk from May 17 through May 21, 2024. The cucumbers went to distribution centers and food-service distributors in 14 states; English and mini cucumbers were not included. FDA published the recall notice on June 1 after a cucumber sample tested positive for Salmonella. The recall was separate from the broader 2024 cucumber outbreak investigation, which ultimately identified other likely sources.
Which cucumbers were recalled in June 2024?
The voluntary recall announced by Fresh Start Produce Sales, Inc., covered dark green whole cucumbers about 1.5–2 inches in diameter and 5–9 inches long. They were shipped in bulk cartons from May 17 through May 21, 2024, to retail distribution centers, wholesalers and food-service distributors. FDA said the cucumbers were unlikely to remain in the marketplace by the time its notice was published June 1.
The recall did not include English cucumbers or mini cucumbers. Because the product was distributed in bulk rather than identified here by a consumer-facing brand or package code, people unsure whether a cucumber they bought was covered were advised to ask their retailer. FDA’s recall notice gives the product description and distribution details.

What should you do if you bought or handled them?
- Do not eat cucumbers you believe are part of the recall. Discard them or return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
- If you cannot identify whether your cucumbers were included, contact the retailer. The recall covered specified bulk shipments, not every cucumber sold during June.
- Clean contact surfaces and items. CDC advised washing items and surfaces that may have touched recalled cucumbers with hot, soapy water or in a dishwasher.
These were the official handling instructions in the FDA notice and CDC’s June 5 warning.

Was the Fresh Start recall responsible for the 2024 cucumber outbreak?
The recall and the outbreak investigations were related in time, but the recalled cucumbers were not established as the source of all illnesses. The recall began after Pennsylvania’s Department of Agriculture notified Fresh Start that a cucumber sample tested positive for Salmonella. At first, investigators had not determined whether that sample carried an outbreak strain.
On June 12, FDA reported that the strain found on the recalled Fresh Start cucumbers was Salmonella Bareilly and did not match any ongoing outbreak then under investigation. At that point, FDA was separately investigating Salmonella Africana and Salmonella Braenderup outbreaks and had not established whether those outbreaks shared a food source.
Rank #3
In July and August, agencies combined the Africana and Braenderup investigations based on similarities in illness timing and location, demographics and reported foods. FDA later identified cucumbers from Bedner Growers, Inc., and Thomas Produce Company, both in Florida, as likely sources. Investigators found Salmonella Braenderup in canal-water samples at both farms; sequencing linked the Thomas Produce water strain to a strain that caused some illnesses. FDA said the two growers did not account for every case.

The final outbreak totals were 551 illnesses in 34 states and the District of Columbia, 155 hospitalizations and no reported deaths. CDC said illnesses began between March 11 and July 26, 2024. These figures describe the combined outbreak investigation, not illnesses attributed specifically to the Fresh Start recall. CDC’s final outbreak summary, updated October 1, 2024, states: “This outbreak is over.”

FDA’s final investigation update was published August 22, 2024. Together, the agency accounts distinguish the specific recalled shipment from the broader outbreak and its likely sources.
