To become a psychotherapist in the United States, choose the professional license that covers the work you want to do and the state where you plan to practice, then complete that profession’s education, supervised training, exams, and licensing requirements. “Psychotherapist” is a broad description, not one nationwide license: clinical and counseling psychologists generally need doctoral preparation for independent practice, while marriage and family therapists typically enter the field with a relevant master’s degree.

What does “psychotherapist” mean?

Psychotherapist describes work providing psychotherapy; it does not identify a single U.S. license. Different licensed professions may provide therapy, and each has its own scope of practice and qualification rules. Requirements also vary by state, so a degree that fits one profession or jurisdiction may not meet another’s licensing requirements.

This overview focuses on two well-established routes: clinical or counseling psychology and marriage and family therapy. Counselors and other licensed mental health professionals may also provide psychotherapy, but their specific degree and licensing pathways must be checked separately.

Which degree do you need?

Clinical or counseling psychologist

For independent practice as a clinical psychologist, a doctoral degree is generally the expected education credential. The American Psychological Association (APA) describes both PhD and PsyD programs as professional psychology training routes. PhD study is commonly more research-focused, while PsyD study is commonly more applied; program structure and emphasis vary.

A doctorate alone does not grant a license. APA notes that most states require doctoral education from an APA- or Canadian Psychological Association (CPA)-accredited program, as well as additional supervised training. State rules determine the actual eligibility requirements, including what training and examinations are needed.

Marriage and family therapist

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says marriage and family therapists typically need a relevant master’s degree, such as one in marriage and family therapy, psychology, or a related mental health field. Programs commonly include supervised practicum or internship experience. States require licensure, including a state-specified amount of supervised postdegree clinical experience and a state-recognized examination.

Other therapy professions

Other licensed mental health professionals, including counselors, may provide therapy. Their requirements are not interchangeable with psychologist or marriage and family therapist requirements. Identify the exact credential and legal scope of practice you are pursuing before choosing a program.

How to become a psychotherapist: a practical sequence

  1. Choose where you intend to practice. Identify the state or jurisdiction first; its licensing rules shape which degrees, placements, and exams will count.
  2. Select a professional license. Match the kind of work you want to do to a specific credential, such as psychologist or marriage and family therapist, rather than relying on the broad label “psychotherapist.”
  3. Check the licensing board’s current rules before enrolling. Confirm the required degree level, coursework, accreditation or program approval, supervised placements, exams, and any registration needed before full licensure.
  4. Complete the required education and supervised training. The common independent-practice route for psychologists is doctoral; a relevant master’s is typical for marriage and family therapists. Complete the supervised practicum, internship, and any postdegree experience required for your license.
  5. Pass the required exam and apply for licensure. Follow the board’s process for your profession and jurisdiction. After licensure, check that board’s current rules for maintaining it.

How to compare programs before you commit

For a personal-finance decision, compare programs against the licensing rules—not just their marketing, degree title, or advertised career outcomes. A program’s accreditation or approval is one part of the fit; it does not by itself establish that you qualify for a particular state license.

  • License fit: Will graduates meet the education requirements for the specific license and state you have chosen?
  • Accreditation or board approval: Does the program meet the accrediting or approval standard the licensing board requires?
  • Degree and profession: Does the degree lead toward the credential you intend to pursue?
  • Supervised placements: Does the program provide placements that fit the board’s required sequence and training expectations?
  • Cost and time: Compare total cost and expected time to completion across programs. There is no single reliable cost or completion timeline for every route in this overview, so use the institutions’ current figures and verify that the program satisfies the board’s rules.

What to verify with the licensing board

Before paying an application fee or enrolling, consult the licensing board for your intended profession and state. Ask whether the exact program and degree satisfy its education rules, how supervised experience is structured, which examinations are accepted, and whether you need permission or registration before beginning supervised work. If you may move, check the rules in the state where you expect to practice; do not assume a credential or training sequence automatically transfers.
