American Gaming Association (AGA) figures put U.S. commercial sports betting revenue in 2025 at either $16.89 billion or $16.96 billion, depending on which AGA publication you use. The AGA’s separate announcement also reports $166.94 billion wagered that year. These figures measure different things: handle is the amount wagered; revenue is the amount reported as sportsbook revenue. The two 2025 revenue estimates are not reconciled in the reviewed publications, and the annual-report figure excludes tribal casino sportsbook revenue and Florida mobile betting conducted as tribal gaming.
How much did Americans bet on sports in 2025?
The AGA’s 2026 commercial gaming announcement reports $166.94 billion in U.S. sports betting handle in 2025, up 11.0% from 2024. Handle is the total amount wagered, not the amount bettors lost or the revenue sportsbooks retained.
The AGA’s separate State of the States 2026 page reports $16.89 billion in commercial sports betting revenue for 2025, up 22.6% from 2024. That annual-report total excludes sportsbook revenue at tribal casinos and Florida mobile sports betting conducted as tribal gaming.
How much revenue did sports betting generate?
The AGA’s 2026 announcement gives a different 2025 figure: $16.96 billion in sports betting revenue, up 22.8%. The announcement and the annual-report page do not explain why their figures and growth rates differ. They should be treated as separate AGA-reported estimates rather than combined into one supposedly harmonized total.
#1 Best Overall
The same AGA announcement reports $3.71 billion in state-regulated sportsbook taxes in 2025, up 32.4%. Taxes are a separate measure from both handle and sportsbook revenue; they should not be added to either figure to calculate market size.
How do the latest figures compare with 2024?
| Measure | AGA-reported figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 handle | $166.94 billion; up 11.0% (AGA 2026 commercial gaming announcement) | Total amount wagered, not sportsbook revenue |
| 2025 revenue, annual-report page | $16.89 billion; up 22.6% (AGA, State of the States 2026) | Commercial sports betting revenue; excludes tribal casino sportsbook revenue and Florida mobile sports betting conducted as tribal gaming |
| 2025 revenue, separate announcement | $16.96 billion; up 22.8% (AGA 2026 commercial gaming announcement) | Sports betting revenue; the announcement does not explain its difference from the annual-report total |
| 2025 state-regulated sportsbook taxes | $3.71 billion; up 32.4% (AGA 2026 commercial gaming announcement) | Taxes reported separately from handle and revenue |
| 2024 commercial sports betting revenue | $13.78 billion; up 24.8% (AGA, State of the States 2025) | Commercial-market revenue |
| 2024 legal wagers | $149.90 billion (AGA, State of the States 2025) | Amount legally wagered, not revenue |
The AGA’s 2025 report says legal sports betting launched in North Carolina and Vermont during 2024. That context helps explain market expansion, but it does not by itself show how much of the year-over-year change came from new markets rather than activity in existing ones.

What is the difference between handle and revenue?
- Handle is the total amount wagered over a stated period. It is not a measure of how much bettors lost, and a wagered dollar can be counted again if it is wagered again.
- Revenue is the amount reported as sportsbook revenue. It is a different market measure from handle and should not be described as total bets or total consumer spending.
- Taxes are government receipts reported separately. A tax total is not interchangeable with sportsbook revenue, and the AGA’s 2025 announcement reports a state-regulated tax figure distinct from both.
For example, the AGA announcement’s $166.94 billion handle and $16.96 billion revenue figures are not two ways of expressing the same amount. They describe different parts of the market.
Do these numbers include every U.S. sportsbook?
Not necessarily. The AGA’s annual-report 2025 commercial revenue total explicitly excludes revenue from sportsbooks in tribal casinos and Florida mobile sports betting conducted as tribal gaming. Commercial-market totals therefore should not automatically be presented as a complete count of all sports wagering activity in the United States.

The AGA is an industry association, and its figures are AGA-reported market statistics, not a single universally harmonized government series. Coverage and definitions matter when comparing totals. The separate 2025 AGA revenue publications also differ without a published reconciliation in the reviewed material.
How many Americans support sports betting?
In the AGA’s 2024 American Attitudes Survey, 75% of Americans said they supported legal sports wagering in their home state, and 90% viewed sports betting as acceptable entertainment. These are reported attitudes, not estimates of how many people place bets, how often they wager, or how much they wager.

How many states have legal sports betting?
A current state count is not established by the figures above. Legal status and product availability can change, and state rules may differ. The AGA’s State of Play map is a starting point for checking state status, but readers should confirm current rules with the relevant state regulator before relying on a state count or assuming a particular product is available.
The AGA also distinguishes state- and tribal-regulated sportsbooks from prediction-market platforms offering sports event contracts. That distinction reflects the AGA’s regulatory framing; it is not, by itself, a settled legal conclusion about every platform or jurisdiction.

How to compare sports betting statistics responsibly
- Compare like with like: handle against handle or revenue against revenue, not one measure against another.
- Use the same reporting period and publisher where possible, and check whether figures cover commercial activity alone or include tribal markets.
- Keep online and retail totals separate when a source reports them separately; do not infer a split when it is not provided.
- Check how state totals, taxes, and market launches are treated before attributing growth to a particular cause.
- Do not infer participation or betting frequency from handle or survey attitudes. The cited figures do not establish a methodologically specified national count of sports betting participants.
