The Air France KLM Visa Signature earns Flying Blue miles on eligible purchases, while XP—not miles—moves you toward Flying Blue elite status. You can redeem miles for reward flights, eligible travel extras and other partner options, but award tickets still require cash for taxes and carrier surcharges. The card’s two official pages currently show different welcome offers, so rely on the terms on the application page you use.

How the Air France KLM Visa earns Flying Blue miles

The card’s published purchase rates are 3 miles per dollar on eligible Air France, KLM and SkyTeam purchases, 3 miles per dollar on eligible dining, and 1.5 miles per dollar on other purchases. Merchant eligibility and category coding matter; check the card’s disclosures for exclusions and posting terms. Air France’s card page and Bank of America’s product page list these rates.

These are card miles. Eligible flights and other Flying Blue partners may also earn miles under their own terms. The card page says miles can be used across a SkyTeam network of more than 1,000 destinations; that figure describes the network, not award-seat availability on every route.

Welcome offer: check the application page

The two official pages displayed different offers when checked: Air France advertised 70,000 bonus miles plus 100 XP after at least $3,000 in purchases in the first 90 days from account opening; Bank of America displayed 50,000 bonus miles plus 100 XP after $2,000 or more in purchases in the first 90 days. These offers should not be combined or treated as universally available. The issuer page also showed an unavailable-page notice alongside its product details, so review the live application disclosures before applying. Air France’s offer; Bank of America’s offer.

Annual fee and anniversary benefits

The cited card pages list an $89 annual fee and no foreign transaction fees. They also list 5,000 anniversary miles after at least $50 in purchases during the anniversary year. The card provides 20 XP each account anniversary; Bank of America describes a total of 100 XP after $15,000 in qualifying anniversary-year purchases and 160 XP after $25,000. Check current card terms for eligibility and how these benefits are awarded.

Air France separately advertises 3 miles per dollar on rent paid through Bilt up to $50,000 annually. This is a promotion, not an evergreen card earn rate; check the linked terms and availability on Air France’s card page.

Miles and XP do different jobs

Miles are the reward currency: you can use them for flights and other eligible redemptions. XP measures progress through Flying Blue status tiers. The program lists 100 XP to reach Silver, then 180 XP from Silver to Gold and 300 XP from Gold to Platinum. The card’s offer page equates 100 XP with Silver status. See Flying Blue’s program overview for the status framework; program rules and flight earning conditions can change.

In practical terms, a purchase that earns card miles does not automatically earn XP. Card purchase rates and status progress are separate benefits, and XP thresholds are status-specific.

How to redeem Flying Blue miles

Reward flights

Air France says members can book one-way or return reward flights in Economy, Premium or Business on Air France and KLM, subject to availability. Prices vary by itinerary, so use the Flying Blue miles price estimator for the route and dates you want instead of assuming a fixed mileage price.

You cannot cover all award-ticket charges with miles: Air France states, “Taxes and carrier surcharges cannot be paid using Miles.” Pay these in cash when booking. Air France reward-ticket guidance.

Cash & Miles

Cash & Miles lets you combine miles with a payment method on eligible bookings. For eligible regular tickets, you can pay up to 25% with miles; for reward tickets, you can pay up to 25% with cash. Eligibility covers Air France, KLM and partner airlines under the current terms. Flying Blue’s Cash & Miles page.

Regular tickets booked this way continue to earn miles and XP. On reward tickets, miles and XP accrue only on the cash-paid portion. That distinction can matter if you are comparing a cash fare with a reward ticket or a mixed payment.

Travel extras and other options

Miles can also pay for eligible extras such as additional baggage, seat options and cabin upgrades; confirm availability and the price in your booking. Air France’s miles-use page and Flying Blue’s redemption information describe these options.

Other listed uses include hotel stays, store purchases, partner-site shopping where Flying Blue+ is available, experiences, charity donations and selected local offers. Availability may depend on the partner or booking; these are alternatives, not inherently better value than flights. Check the terms for the specific redemption.

How to compare a miles booking with a cash fare

There is no single published cents-per-mile value that applies to every Flying Blue redemption. Compare the actual options for your itinerary rather than relying on a universal valuation. Include:

  • The miles required and the total cash due, including taxes and carrier surcharges.
  • The cabin, route, dates and whether seats are actually available.
  • Any flexibility or change terms that matter for your trip.
  • Whether the ticket earns miles and XP: eligible regular Cash & Miles tickets continue to earn both, while reward-ticket accrual applies only to the cash-paid portion.

For a regular cash ticket versus a reward ticket, use the prices and conditions shown for the same itinerary. A lower mileage price alone does not settle which option costs less overall.
