For most Flying Blue members, an eligible activity that earns miles extends the entire balance by 24 months under the rule announced for May 4, 2026. Elite and Elite Plus members, Flying Blue Extra subscribers, co-branded cardholders, and members under 18 are listed as groups whose miles do not expire under the policy described. Germany is an exception: the new rule does not apply to the German market.
How does the 2026 Flying Blue expiration rule work?
Flying Blue says that, starting May 4, 2026, eligible earning activity extends the validity of a covered member’s entire miles balance by 24 months. The balance has one shared expiration date; you do not need to repeat the original earning method for each batch of miles. Flying Blue also says existing balances move to the new system, retaining the most favorable existing deadline at implementation. See Flying Blue’s policy announcement.
The policy describes eligible activity as activity that earns miles, not simply signing in, making any purchase, or placing any booking. Flying Blue gives booking a flight, reserving a hotel, renting a car, and using partner services as examples. Confirm that the particular activity qualifies under the current terms for your market.

Check the current applicable conditions and your account rather than assuming an exemption based on a card, subscription, age, or status that may not meet the program’s terms.
What is the Germany exception?
Flying Blue says the new 24-month balance-wide rule does not apply to the German market. Its Germany page describes validity as three years plus the remainder of the current calendar year. This is a Germany-specific condition, not a general rule for other members. Check the terms for your market and the expiration date shown in your account. Flying Blue Germany.

Which activities can extend your balance?
Flights and other eligible partner activity
An activity must earn miles to qualify. Flying Blue’s examples include booking a flight, reserving a hotel, renting a car, and using partner services. Before relying on one, check that it is eligible for your account and allow enough time for the miles to post before the date displayed in your account.
Online shopping through Earn Online
For a retailer purchase, begin at the Flying Blue Earn Online portal and click through to the retailer so the visit can be tracked. The retailer decides whether the transaction qualifies. The portal lists returns, failed payment, registration or retailer-term issues, and clicks that did not originate from the portal among reasons miles may be cancelled. It says missed portal clicks cannot be credited retroactively.

Keep transaction details in case you need to query missing miles, and do not assume a purchase will extend your balance until qualifying miles post. A purchase made solely to preserve miles may cost more than those miles are worth.

The Earn Online FAQ says, “As long as you have a qualifying activity every 20 month your Miles will not expire.” That wording conflicts with Flying Blue’s newer announcement, which says eligible activity extends the balance by 24 months under the new rule. Do not treat the older FAQ interval as the universal current rule: use the expiration date shown in your account and the current terms for your market. Flying Blue Earn Online FAQ.
