Start with the company’s own dated financial disclosures, then separate recognized revenue from measures such as ARR, bookings and annualized run rate. For valuation, identify what is being valued, compare only genuinely similar businesses, and show the assumptions behind any estimate. An AI company’s revenue or valuation is not established by a headline number alone.
First define the company and the value you want to know
“AI company” describes a technology, not a single financial model. A model developer, cloud infrastructure provider, AI-enabled software subscription business and services firm can have very different revenue patterns, margins and capital needs. A SaaS multiple may help value a recurring software business; it is not automatically a useful benchmark for a company whose economics depend on hardware, usage charges, licensing or consulting.
Before collecting figures, write down the legal entity and subsidiaries included, geography, fiscal year, reporting currency and consolidation scope. Then clarify the valuation question. You might be looking for an enterprise value, equity value, public-market value at a particular date, or the value implied by a financing or acquisition. These are not interchangeable. A financing price also reflects the security sold and its rights; it does not necessarily establish the value of every share class or the common equity.
What revenue has the company actually reported?
Preserve the company’s exact label for every figure. “Revenue” can refer to recognized accounting revenue, while ARR, bookings, billings, contract value and forecasts measure different things. A recent quarter multiplied by four is an annualized run rate, not necessarily the company’s revenue for the past 12 months or its contracted recurring revenue.

| Metric | What it describes | What to check before using it |
|---|---|---|
| Recognized revenue | Revenue recorded under the company’s stated accounting basis for a specific period. | Period, accounting basis, consolidation scope, currency, recognition policy and whether statements are audited or filed. |
| ARR | A company-defined annual recurring revenue measure, usually built from recurring contracts or subscriptions. | The company’s definition, treatment of usage-based fees, services, discounts, churn, signed-but-not-live contracts and nonrecurring items. ARR is not automatically audited revenue. |
| Annualized run rate | A recent revenue amount projected across a year using a stated annualization method. | The period and formula. It can imply a full year’s scale from a short or unusually strong period without showing what will actually be recognized. |
| Bookings, billings or contract value | Measures tied to orders, invoicing or a contract’s stated value rather than necessarily to revenue recognized in that period. | Contract duration, cancellation terms, billing schedule, implementation conditions and how much is recurring versus one-time. |
| Forecast or guidance | A forward-looking estimate attributed to management or another named publisher. | Who produced it, when, whether it is preliminary or unaudited, the forecast period and the assumptions disclosed. |
For a company with public filings or reported financial statements, use those as the starting point. Rank audited statements and regulatory filings above company press releases, presentations and interviews, and third-party estimates. Lower-ranked sources can still be useful, but label them as company claims or estimates rather than established financial results. A private company may not publish equivalent information; limited disclosure does not prove that a particular outside estimate is correct.
Build an evidence record for each figure before comparing it with another one:
- Source and date: identify the filing, statement, release, presentation, interview or estimate and when it was published.
- Period and metric name: preserve the period covered and the source’s label.
- Basis and scope: record the accounting basis, entities included and whether the figure is consolidated.
- Geography and currency: state the reporting currency and any geographic scope disclosed; do not silently convert currencies.
- Revenue composition: note recurring and nonrecurring components, if disclosed.
- Confidence and limits: distinguish audited results from company-defined measures, preliminary figures and third-party estimates.
Does ARR mean contracted recurring revenue or an annualized run rate?
Do not infer the answer from the acronym. Ask how the company calculated ARR, what date it represents and what it includes. A measure based on contracts in force can differ substantially from one based on the latest month’s usage multiplied by 12. Neither should be relabeled as recognized revenue.
The SaaS Capital Index provides a useful example of why formulas matter: its stated method takes the most recent quarterly revenue, divides by three to get a monthly amount, then annualizes that run rate. Its revenue multiple uses current market capitalization divided by that annualized amount. SaaS Capital says the measure is based on “annualized current run-rate revenue, not trailing or projected revenue.” That is a specific index convention, not a universal ARR definition and not trailing-twelve-month revenue.

For an individual AI company, look for the definition alongside the figure. If it is absent, report that the definition was not disclosed instead of assuming the measure reflects signed contracts, renewal behavior or recognized revenue.
How do accounting and revenue mix affect the number?
Cash collected, billings and recognized revenue can fall in different periods. The SEC-filed annual report for the fiscal year ended January 31, 2025 illustrates the issue: the company described revenue from SaaS subscriptions, term and perpetual licenses, support, subscription services and professional services. It generally recognized subscriptions over the service term, licenses when transferred and services as rendered. Contracts can bundle obligations, so allocating their price requires judgment.
This filing is an example of why to inspect a company’s own revenue-recognition note, not evidence that every AI business uses the same model or timing. When a company reports a growth figure, check whether a change in product mix, contract structure or recognition timing could affect comparisons across periods.
How should you assess the quality and economics of AI revenue?
Growth by itself does not show how durable or profitable revenue may be. Use the company’s disclosures to examine the following; if information is unavailable, mark it as undisclosed rather than filling the gap with assumptions.

- Recurring revenue: What portion comes from subscriptions or contracted recurring usage, and what portion is one-time services, implementation or licensing?
- Retention and expansion: Are renewal rates, churn, net revenue retention or usage expansion reported, and for what customer cohort and period?
- Customer concentration: How dependent is revenue on a small number of customers, if concentration data is disclosed?
- Gross margin and delivery costs: How do cloud, inference and compute costs scale as customer usage grows? Does the company operate its own models, resell access or rely on third-party model and cloud providers?
- Cash conversion: Compare receivables, deferred revenue and cash collection with recognized revenue where the statements allow it.
- Growth inputs: Ask whether reported growth depends on subsidies, unusually discounted usage or other arrangements that may not persist; treat this as a question to test, not a conclusion without evidence.
These checks matter because two companies with similar reported revenue can have different recurrence, customer dependence, delivery costs and cash needs. Do not assign a favorable or unfavorable conclusion to an AI business unless its disclosures support it.
Which peers are comparable enough to use?
Build a small, named peer set and explain both inclusions and exclusions. Compare product and customer, business model, recurring versus transactional mix, growth, retention, gross margin, scale, geography and maturity. A mixed set of model developers, infrastructure vendors, application software companies and consulting firms will not support a clean single revenue multiple unless the differences are addressed.
SaaS public-company multiples are a starting point only when recurring software economics genuinely fit. SaaS Capital’s Index is a selected public B2B SaaS universe; it excludes some B2C, very small B2B and mixed-revenue businesses because their economics differ from the index population. Its data is stated as of September 30, 2026. That scope makes the index informative about its own population, not a universal benchmark for AI companies.
Historical market data should be dated and described as historical. Software Equity Group’s 2026 Annual SaaS Report says Cloudflare’s revenue multiple nearly doubled from 20x to 36x during 2025 while the company reported 28% growth. The report also gives end-of-2025 revenue multiples of 6.9x for DevOps & IT Management and 6.7x for ERP & Supply Chain. These are examples of past SaaS market pricing, not current October 2026 quotes or values to apply mechanically to an AI company. SEG defines its quarterly EV/TTM revenue multiple using quarter-end enterprise value and the last available trailing-twelve-month revenue, which may be from one quarter earlier.

When reporting any multiple, specify the numerator and denominator. Enterprise value divided by revenue is different from equity value divided by revenue; market capitalization is not enterprise value. Also say whether the denominator is trailing-twelve-month revenue, next-twelve-month revenue, ARR or an annualized quarter. Public multiples move with market prices and should always carry an as-of date.

Use more than one valuation lens where evidence permits, and explain what each one can and cannot answer.
| Method | What it uses | Key assumptions and limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Public-company market multiples | Observed market prices for selected listed peers relative to a defined financial metric. | Peer fit, metric definition and date matter. A poorly matched peer set or inconsistent revenue periods can make the apparent multiple misleading. |
| Discounted cash flow (DCF) | Forecast cash flows discounted to present value, plus a terminal value. | Disclose forecast horizon, revenue and margin assumptions, reinvestment and cash-flow conversion, discount rate, terminal method and sensitivity range. Small changes to long-term assumptions can materially change the result. |
| Private financing or transaction evidence | A price observed in a financing or transaction at a particular date. | Identify the instrument, rights, date, parties and transaction context. A financing price is an observed transaction, not automatically an independent appraisal of all equity. |
These approaches answer related but different questions. Multiples show how markets price selected peers under current or historical conditions. A DCF makes a company’s projected cash flows and discounting assumptions explicit. The SEC-filed Ocean Tomo opinion on PlusAI, delivered June 5, 2025, used both a DCF and a market approach, including exit multiples derived from selected public comparables. Its scenarios varied truck deployment timing, utilization and deployment assumptions. The practical lesson is that a point estimate without its scenario assumptions hides uncertainty.
For a private B2B SaaS company, SaaS Capital’s 2025 valuation framework identifies current public multiples, ARR growth and net revenue retention as inputs. Its own wording is apt: “There is no one-size-fits-all multiple – but it is possible to make an informed, data-driven estimate.” This is a framework for businesses whose economics fit private B2B SaaS, not a formula validated for every AI business.

A private-company estimate also needs to explain adjustments for scale, liquidity, control, financing rights, execution risk and the quality of available data. Do not copy a public-company multiple without explaining those differences. If the disclosures cannot support a defensible numerical range, state that and identify which inputs are missing.
A practical research sequence
- Define the subject: confirm the legal entity, included subsidiaries, geography, fiscal year and reporting currency.
- State the valuation question: specify enterprise value, equity value, public market value or transaction-implied value, and the date it refers to.
- Collect primary financial disclosures: start with filings and company-reported financial statements, then gather releases, presentations and interviews. Record third-party estimates separately.
- Normalize revenue labels: separate recognized revenue, ARR, run rate, bookings, billings, contract value and forecasts. Keep each source’s definition, period and accounting basis attached to its number.
- Review recognition and composition: read the revenue-recognition note and identify recurring, services, licensing and usage components where disclosed.
- Assess revenue quality and costs: review retention, concentration, gross margin, compute costs, third-party dependencies, deferred revenue, receivables and cash collection, while distinguishing disclosed facts from unanswered questions.
- Select and document peers: choose businesses with sufficiently similar economics, note exclusions and differences, and date all public-market multiples.
- Show the valuation method: define the numerator and denominator for multiples, or disclose the forecast, discounting and terminal assumptions for a DCF. Use scenarios or a range where assumptions materially affect the result.
- Write the conclusion conditionally: present the evidence, date, method and limitations together. Do not turn a financing headline or third-party estimate into a timeless statement of what the company is worth.
How to report uncertainty without overstating the evidence
Attach the qualification to the number whenever you use it: who reported or calculated it, for which period, on what basis, in what currency, and as of what date. Label management-defined measures, preliminary figures and third-party estimates plainly. If a company has not disclosed a figure or definition, say so; do not substitute an unsupported sector average.
No named statistic about AI-company revenue as a whole is established by the sources discussed here. Treat each company on its own disclosed economics. A valuation range is conditional on available information and assumptions—not a fact that can be read directly from a fundraising headline.
