The exact “11 best shampoos for kids and babies, tested by kids and parents” list could not be verified, so no products can be presented as that article’s tested picks. Independent publishers do provide separate recommendations, but a good choice for your child depends on age, hair type, scalp sensitivity, and how the product feels to use—not a “tear-free” label alone.

What the independent reviews recommend

These are recommendations from other publishers, not verified picks from the 11-product roundup named in the title.

BabyGearLab’s baby-shampoo review

BabyGearLab says it has hands-on tested 10 baby shampoos with babies and parents since 2020. Its process includes washing, lathering and rinsing products, using multiple testers, researching ingredients, and gathering parent feedback. On its page updated June 30, 2025, it names Babo Botanicals Sensitive Baby Shampoo & Wash as its overall pick, Honest Truly Calming Lavender Shampoo and Wash for value, and Hello Bello Extra Gentle for local availability. Other products on its list are Aveeno Baby Healthy Start Nourishing Newborn Wash, Puracy Citrus Grove Baby Shampoo and Body Wash, Weleda Baby 2-in-1 Shampoo and Body Wash, Aquaphor Baby Wash and Shampoo, CeraVe Baby Wash and Shampoo, Mustela Baby Foam Shampoo for Cradle Cap, and Johnson’s Baby Shampoo. See BabyGearLab’s full review and testing details.

NBC Select’s guide for children

NBC Select’s separate guide focuses on products made for children age three and up. It names Aveeno 2-in-1 Kids Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner as its overall pick, Raw Sugar Living Kids’ 2-in-1 Sensitive Shampoo & Conditioner for sensitive scalps, Shea Moisture Mango & Carrot Kids’ Extra-Nourishing Shampoo as most moisturizing, and Evereden Kids Detangling Shampoo for detangling. Read NBC Select’s guide for its criteria and product details.

How to choose for your child

Match the product to age and use

Baby shampoos and children’s shampoos are not interchangeable recommendations for every age. Check the product’s age guidance and whether it is shampoo-only or a shampoo-and-body-wash combination. A combined product may simplify bath time, while a child with longer or easily tangled hair may benefit from a formula designed for detangling or conditioning.

Consider scalp sensitivity and eczema

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises parents of children with eczema to choose a gentle, fragrance-free shampoo. A reaction may not appear right away: an ingredient can trigger a flare hours or days later. Ask your child’s dermatologist for product advice, and consider products bearing the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance. A “hypoallergenic” claim does not guarantee that a product will suit an individual child. The AAD explains its guidance in How can I find eczema friendly products?

Do not treat “tear-free” as a guarantee

NBC Select quotes board-certified dermatologist Dr. Brendan Camp saying that children’s skin is thinner and more sensitive than adults’ skin. The publication also reports that “tear-free” has no clearly defined or regulated definition. Treat it as a product claim, not a promise that shampoo cannot sting or irritate your child. Johnson’s says its Baby Shampoo is “as gentle to the eyes as pure water”; that is the manufacturer’s statement, not independent proof that no child will experience irritation. See Johnson’s product page.

Check practical details before buying

  • Hair texture: Think about whether the child’s hair is fine, curly, dry, or prone to tangling; cleansing and detangling needs can differ.
  • Ingredients: Read the label, especially when a child has eczema or a known sensitivity. Fragrance-free options are relevant for eczema care.
  • Bath-time usability: Consider whether the container is manageable for the caregiver and whether a combined wash would be useful.
  • Price and availability: These vary by retailer and location. The cited reviews do not establish current prices, so check the seller’s current listing rather than relying on an old price.

How often should children shampoo?

The AAD’s frequency guidance applies specifically to children aged 8–12; it should not be used as an infant shampoo schedule. For children in this age group, frequency depends on age, hair type, and activity.

  • Ages 8–11: Generally shampoo once or twice a week. Dry, curly hair is an exception to this general schedule.
  • Age 12 or starting puberty: A child with oily, straight hair—or one who is often outdoors, plays sports, or swims—may shampoo daily or every other day. Dry, curly hair remains an exception.
  • Dry, curly hair: The AAD says hair of this type, including hair in braids or weaves, may be shampooed every 7–10 days.

Adjust based on how the hair and scalp respond: oiliness, dullness, shedding, or dryness can indicate that the routine needs changing. If the scalp or hair remains too oily or too dry, consult a dermatologist. The full chart is in the AAD’s hair-washing guidance for children.

What the title’s testing claim can—and cannot—establish

The exact article behind the “11 best” title, its 11 products, participants, testing protocol, and publication or update date could not be verified. BabyGearLab’s 10-product hands-on review and NBC Select’s children’s-shampoo guide are distinct publications with their own selections; neither establishes what the title’s article tested. Use their lists as separately attributed starting points, not as evidence for the unverified roundup.
