If your Social Security payment is missing, first check whether it was scheduled to arrive and ask your bank or financial institution about a posting delay. If the deposit arrived but the amount is wrong, review your benefit information and SSA notices; the cause and remedy depend on your benefit type and the reason for the change. A missing payment is a payment-tracing problem, while an incorrect amount may involve changed circumstances, deductions, or a decision you can appeal.
What to do if your Social Security payment is missing
1. Check the scheduled payment date
Payment dates depend on your benefit and circumstances, so check the current SSA missing-payment guidance and your account information rather than assuming everyone is paid on the same day. SSA’s account services can also help you review benefit-management details.
2. Contact your bank first if an electronic deposit is late
If an electronic payment has not appeared on its scheduled pay date, SSA instructs you to contact your bank or financial institution first. The bank may be experiencing a delay in posting the payment. Ask whether a deposit is pending or was rejected, and confirm which account the payment was sent to.
3. Report a payment that is still missing
If the bank cannot resolve the issue, report the late, missing, or stolen payment to SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or contact a local Social Security office. The TTY number is 1-800-325-0778. Have the payment month, expected amount, destination account details, and any relevant SSA correspondence ready. This information can help explain the problem, though SSA does not prescribe this as an exhaustive checklist.

#1 Best Overall
SSA says it will review the case and replace a payment if it determines one is due. Reporting a missing payment does not by itself guarantee replacement, and SSA does not give one resolution timeline for every case.
Why your Social Security payment amount may have changed
Compare the amount deposited with what SSA said to expect, then review recent notices and account information for an explanation. A lower payment is not automatically an SSA error: benefit calculations, deductions, work or other income, household circumstances, and changes to your address or bank information may be relevant, depending on the benefit.

SSI recipients: report changes that can affect payment
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) has specific reporting rules. SSA says recipients must report relevant changes in areas such as employment, living arrangements, marital status, household composition, resources, bank accounts, and time outside the United States. Report applicable changes promptly and no later than the tenth day of the month after the change. See SSA’s SSI reporting instructions. This deadline is for SSI reporting; do not apply it to every Social Security benefit category.
If you disagree with an SSA decision
If the amount reflects a benefit decision you believe is wrong, follow the appeal instructions in the notice. SSA’s general process can include reconsideration, a hearing with an administrative law judge, Appeals Council review, and federal district court action. The available steps, filing method, and deadlines depend on the decision and program. Use the notice and SSA’s appeal guidance to identify the right procedure.

How to respond to an SSA overpayment notice
An overpayment means SSA says it paid more than was due. Read the notice for the period, amount, reason, and response options. Choose the request that matches what you dispute:
| What you believe | Possible response |
|---|---|
| You were not overpaid, or SSA’s amount is wrong. | Request reconsideration using Form SSA-561 and explain why the finding or calculation is incorrect. |
| You agree there was an overpayment, but believe repayment should not be required because it was not your fault and repayment would be unaffordable or unfair. | Request a waiver using Form SSA-632. |
| You agree repayment is owed, but cannot afford the proposed recovery rate. | Ask SSA to change the recovery rate using Form SSA-634. |
SSA says collection will not begin while it decides an appeal or waiver requested within 30 days of the notice. That collection pause is not the same as the appeal-filing deadline: SSA’s overpayments publication says an appeal must be filed within 60 days of receiving the original notice and, unless there is evidence otherwise, assumes receipt five days after the notice date. These rules and consequences can depend on your program and notice, so act promptly and follow the instructions in your own letter. More details and the forms are on SSA’s overpayment guidance and its Form SSA-632 page.

What to do if your direct-deposit details may be wrong
Update options depend on your benefit type, where you live, and whether you can complete SSA’s identity checks. Eligible retirement, survivors, and disability beneficiaries can use my Social Security to update U.S. direct-deposit details. Some banks can send updated information through Automated Enrollment, but not every bank offers that service.
SSI recipients cannot currently make these address or deposit changes online through the same service; they may need to call SSA or contact a local office. SSA’s address and direct-deposit FAQ outlines related options.

SSA says that beginning April 28, 2025, people can change direct deposit by phone after generating a one-time code through ssa.gov/PIN. If you cannot use the online account or generate the code, you may need to visit an SSA office or arrange enrollment through your bank. SSA also says you can keep receiving payments into your existing account without proving your identity just to continue receiving current benefits. Check SSA’s identity-verification guidance for the current process.
