You need an advance reservation and a credit card to guarantee it. Rates and room availability depend on the property and dates.
How to book an IHG Reward Night
- Sign in. Use your IHG One Rewards account on the IHG website or app. IHG requires members to be logged in to redeem online.
- Search for Reward Nights. Start a hotel search and set the rate preference to “Reward Nights.” Enter your destination and travel dates.
- Review the available properties and rooms. Compare the options for your dates. Reward Nights apply to standard rooms as defined by each property, and the room must be available at the Reward Night rate.
- Check the full points cost. Review the total for the stay as well as the nightly amounts. A multi-night search may display both an average nightly rate and individual night prices; the points needed can differ by night.
- Choose points or Points & Cash. Select the points option you want. If using Points & Cash, review and complete the purchase of the additional points required.
- Confirm the reservation. Check the dates, room, points due, and cancellation terms, then provide a credit card to guarantee the booking. IHG also accepts Reward Night bookings through Customer Care.
IHG explains that points pricing is date- and property-specific. Its FAQ says, “Point amounts by hotel can vary daily just like cash rates,” and that “Once you make a booking, you will lock in the required point amounts.” See the Reward Night FAQ.
How IHG points prices and availability work
IHG says Reward Night point requirements fluctuate similarly to cash rates. Its FAQ names room cost, the Best Flexible Rate, and demand as factors; its Customer Service information also identifies brand, location, and day of week. The live search for your hotel and dates is the way to see the rate that applies to your booking.
IHG’s official pages currently give conflicting published starting figures: its Reward Night FAQ says “as few as 5,000 points per night,” while its Redemption Options page says Reward Nights start at 10,000 points. The FAQ dates the 5,000-point figure to November 2022. Neither figure should be treated as a guaranteed rate or a universal minimum; search the specific hotel and dates for the current price.
#1 Best Overall
IHG advertises no blackout dates, but that does not mean a Reward Night room is available at every hotel on every date. A qualifying room and points rate still need to appear for your selected property and stay. IHG says searches can be made up to 50 weeks ahead, and most Reward Nights can be booked through check-in day if inventory remains. These details are described in IHG’s Customer Service Reward Night information; availability depends on the hotel.
When Points & Cash makes sense to compare
Points & Cash uses points you already have plus an immediate purchase of additional points during booking. IHG’s US booking page says members need at least 5,000 points to use the option, and that the cash portion is charged in US dollars. The purchase amount may change, and the charge goes to the valid payment method selected for the transaction. See IHG’s Points & Cash page and membership terms.

Compare the actual Points & Cash charge and points used with both the points-only rate and the cash rate for the same room and dates. There is no universally best choice established by IHG’s published terms; the value depends on the live options and your priorities.
Understand the cancellation consequences
The cash cost of points purchased through Points & Cash is non-refundable. If you cancel within the hotel’s cancellation policy, IHG says the purchased points are redeposited along with the points you already had. If you cancel after the deadline, points may still be redeposited, but the hotel can charge its cancellation fee to the card on file.

What to check before you book
- Cancellation deadline and fee: Policies vary by hotel. IHG says most reservations can be cancelled as late as one day before check-in, but check the specific rate details. Missing the deadline can result in a no-show charge. Six Senses properties have distinct terms under which points can be forfeited after the cancellation window.
- Room suitability: Reward Nights cover standard rooms as defined by the property. Confirm that the room offered meets your needs before booking.
- Number of rooms: Members can book one room at a time with points. IHG’s Customer Service FAQ says an option to duplicate a reservation appears after the first booking is complete.
- Rewards on the stay: The Reward Night room-rate equivalent does not earn IHG points or partner rewards. Eligible incidental charges may earn points, but what qualifies varies by brand and location.
IHG’s Customer Service information and membership terms provide the applicable booking and cancellation details; review the hotel-specific policy shown during booking.
