Keep an IHG card when the benefits you will realistically use—such as its anniversary free night, IHG award-night perks, and status—are worth more to you than its annual fee and the value you could earn elsewhere. Consider a no-annual-fee IHG card or a general travel card if you rarely stay at IHG properties, do not use the IHG-specific benefits, or prefer flexible rewards. There is no universal winner: the answer depends on your card version, travel habits, spending, and account terms.
Start with the annual-fee calculation
Compare the value you personally expect to use over a year with the card’s annual fee. Do not count a benefit at its advertised or theoretical value if you would not use it, or if its restrictions make it inconvenient.
- Anniversary free night: Estimate what a night you would actually book is worth to you, subject to the certificate’s terms and availability.
- IHG rewards: Consider how often you stay at IHG properties, how much card spending earns in the categories you use, and whether you can redeem the resulting points for stays you want.
- Status and travel benefits: Count only benefits you expect to use. A status label has little value if its perks do not change your trips.
- Annual fee: Subtract the fee from the value of benefits you can realistically use. The result is a personal estimate, not a guaranteed cash return.
Chase describes the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card as including an anniversary free night, automatic Platinum Elite status, and a fourth Reward Night Free on qualifying award stays of four or more nights; review the [card’s terms](https://www.chase.com/personal/credit-cards/ihg/premier) for conditions. IHG’s current comparison lists a $99 annual fee for Premier and no annual fee for the IHG One Rewards Traveler Credit Card: [IHG card comparison](https://www.ihg.com/onerewards/content/us/en/cc).
Decide whether IHG-specific value fits your travel
Keeping the IHG card can make sense
The case for keeping it is stronger if you stay with IHG often enough to use its rewards and benefits, can redeem the anniversary night for a stay you value, and find the card’s other perks useful. A qualifying four-night award booking may make the Premier card’s fourth-night benefit relevant, but it matters only if you make those bookings and the account’s terms apply.

A different IHG card may fit better
If you want to remain in the IHG ecosystem but do not get enough value from a paid card, compare the no-annual-fee Traveler card. Its lack of an annual fee avoids the need to justify a recurring cost, but weigh its benefits and terms against the card you have rather than assuming the two products are otherwise equivalent.
A general travel card may fit better
A general travel card can suit someone who books across hotel groups and other travel providers, or who values rewards that are not concentrated in IHG. Compare how each card earns on your actual spending and how you can redeem its rewards; a larger advertised multiplier alone does not establish better value.

Compare rewards and credits by how you use them
Venture X is one example of a broader rewards structure, not a universal recommendation. Capital One lists 2X miles on everyday purchases and higher earning rates on specified bookings through Capital One Travel. It also lists a $395 annual fee, a $300 annual Capital One Travel credit, and a 10,000-mile anniversary bonus on its [Venture X product page](https://www.capitalone.com/credit-cards/venture-x/?oC=0bQ0noocw8&target_id=kwd-1430848566710).
The $300 credit is restricted to Capital One Travel purchases, so count it only if you expect to use the portal and are comfortable with its available options and prices. Apply the same test to any credit or benefit that requires a particular booking channel, registration, spending threshold, or redemption. A credit you would not use is not equivalent to cash back.

These are product-page terms, not independent estimates of what a cardholder’s benefits are worth. Terms may depend on eligibility, booking, redemption, and the specific account.
Check your exact card and account terms first
Do not assume a public product page describes every existing account. Chase announced portfolio changes on October 1, 2026, including a new IHG One Rewards Premier Select Credit Card with a $350 annual fee and updates across the IHG card portfolio. That announcement does not establish how each existing cardholder’s account is affected. See [Chase’s announcement](https://media.chase.com/news/ihg-premier-select-card-portfolio-updates), then check your card agreement, renewal terms, and issuer communications for the terms that apply to you.

Before requesting a product change, ask the issuer which options are available for your account and whether changing products affects benefits or other account terms. Do not assume you can move to a particular card, or that a new product’s terms apply to your current card.

- Identify your exact card and renewal fee. Use your account materials and issuer communications, not only a public page.
- Estimate benefits you will actually use. Include the anniversary night, relevant IHG rewards and status, and any travel benefits, accounting for their conditions.
- Review your own spending and booking patterns. Compare where your purchases earn rewards and whether you book directly, through a card issuer’s portal, or elsewhere.
- Subtract fees and unusable benefits. Do not assign full value to a restricted credit or a perk you are unlikely to use.
- Compare the available alternatives. Consider a no-annual-fee IHG card if you still value IHG, or a general travel card if flexible rewards better match your plans. Check eligibility and product-change terms with the issuer.
Without your annual IHG stays, likely award redemptions, spending by category, use of credits, and account-specific options, there is no sound numeric break-even point to give. No independent published statistic establishes which choice is best for cardholders generally.
