If an IRS letter prompted the visit, use its document list and attendance instructions as your guide. The IRS says an appointment may be canceled if you arrive more than 15 minutes late without checking in.
Before you go, confirm the office can help
TAC services vary by location, so first use the IRS local office finder to search by ZIP code and radius, check the office’s listed services and directions, and find its appointment contact. Call to schedule if that location offers the service you need. The IRS says many issues can instead be handled online or by phone, which may be faster than an in-person visit. Its 2026 Publication 15-A says: “All TACs now provide service by appointment, so you’ll know in advance that you can get the service you need without long wait times.”
What to bring to a typical TAC appointment
Bring originals where the IRS asks for them, and organize records around the issue you are visiting about. The IRS’s general appointment checklist includes:
- Two original forms of identification. At least one should be a current government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, state identification card, or passport. Other examples the IRS lists include a Social Security card, car title, voter registration card, mortgage statement, lease, utility bill, birth certificate, and certain school records. A tribal membership card may be additional ID, but is not a valid substitute for a driver’s license or passport.
- Your taxpayer identification number. Bring your Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
- The relevant tax return. If you filed a return for the year in question, bring it. For questions about income, supporting records may include Forms W-2 or 1099.
- The IRS notice or letter that led to the visit. Bring the full notice and follow any document list or other instructions in it. Some appointment types require specific returns or records beyond the general checklist.
- Other records that support your question. For example, bring the documents the notice references or the records needed to explain the tax issue you want addressed.
If the appointment is for identity verification
Use the letter’s instructions rather than relying only on a general checklist. The requirements differ by letter number.
#1 Best Overall
Letter 5747C
If you filed the return, call the number on Letter 5747C to schedule. The IRS says to bring the letter, the referenced Form 1040-series return, relevant supporting documents, and the required identity records. Forms W-2 and 1099 are not tax returns. An authorized representative may accompany or represent you, but you must attend to authenticate your identity.
Letter 6167C
For Letter 6167C, bring the letter, the return it references, a prior-year return, and supporting records for the returns in question.

If you are applying for or renewing an ITIN
Some TACs review original identity and foreign-status documents, or copies certified by the issuing agency, for ITIN applications and renewals. The IRS says it returns reviewed documents at the end of the appointment. Check the office finder’s service listing and call the IRS appointment line to confirm the location handles ITIN services and to schedule.
If you need language or accessibility support, the IRS ITIN appointment information describes over-the-phone language interpretation and how visitors who are deaf or hard of hearing can arrange sign-language interpretation. Confirm current arrangements when scheduling.
