The available rankings do not establish consistent figures or a transparent method for comparing club salary, bonuses, national-team pay and endorsements. Naming ten players in a definitive order would imply more certainty than the evidence supports. The reliable figures available instead illustrate why contract headlines and team salary caps should not be mistaken for a worldwide player-earnings ranking.
Why a definitive 2026 top ten cannot be verified
A meaningful worldwide ranking needs comparable figures for the same period and a clear definition of earnings. A club salary is not necessarily total annual income: it may leave out bonuses, national-team compensation and endorsement deals. Rankings also need to distinguish gross from net amounts and explain how they annualize multi-year contracts.
The secondary 2026 rankings available do not provide a sufficiently consistent, transparent basis to establish an exact global order or comparable totals. Without that information, publishing ten names and dollar amounts as a verified ranking would create false precision. This does not mean the players in such lists are not highly paid; it means their relative positions and totals cannot be established from the available evidence.
What the reported figures do—and do not—show
NWSL: a team salary cap, not a player salary
The National Women’s Soccer League’s 2026 rules set a $3.5 million base salary cap for a 22–26-player roster. The league says revenue sharing takes the figure to $3.7 million. These are team-level figures, not an individual player’s pay or a league-wide ranking. See the NWSL’s 2026 salary-cap update.

Catarina Macario: a multi-season contract headline
In March 2026, Axios, citing Sportico, reported that Catarina Macario’s San Diego Wave deal was worth roughly $8 million over five seasons, plus a signing bonus and incentives. That reported multi-year contract value is not an annual salary, and it is not an independently audited total of her annual earnings. It should not be compared directly with an annual salary or an endorsement-inclusive earnings estimate. Read Axios’s report.
Forbes: broader athlete context, not a football ranking
Forbes Australia reported that no women appeared on its 2026 list of the 50 highest-paid athletes. That offers broad context about women’s earnings in sport, but it does not identify the highest-paid female footballers or supply a football-specific top ten. See Forbes Australia’s 2026 report.

How to judge a “highest-paid” list
Before treating any list as a ranking, check whether each figure uses the same measurement period and currency, and whether the publisher explains its sources and calculations. In particular, look for:
- Income categories: club salary, bonuses, incentives, national-team pay and endorsements should be identified separately.
- Contract period: a multi-year contract headline should not be presented as annual pay unless the annualization method is stated.
- Gross or net amounts: the basis should be disclosed rather than left implicit.
- Comparable sourcing: each player’s estimate should have a traceable source and a stated date, not simply appear in a list without an explanation.
These distinctions matter because a team cap, a contract’s total value, a player’s annual salary and estimated total earnings answer different questions. The secondary 2026 lists found in the available material do not resolve those differences well enough to support a reliable global order. [c004] [c005]

What readers can conclude in 2026
The available evidence supports a limited conclusion: the NWSL has a published team cap, and a high-profile San Diego Wave contract has been reported at roughly $8 million across five seasons with additional bonus and incentive components. Neither establishes which ten women footballers earn the most worldwide. Until comparable player-by-player figures and methods are available, any purported top ten should be treated as an estimate, not a verified ranking.
