In August 2024, Refresco Beverages US Inc. voluntarily recalled 9,535 cases of a specific Great Value apple juice package sold at Walmart after reporting said tests found inorganic arsenic above the FDA guidance level cited in coverage. The affected product was an 8-ounce bottle six-pack with UPC 0-78742-29655-5 and a best-if-used-by date of December 28, 2024. The recall did not cover every Great Value juice product.

What was reported about arsenic
Supermarket News reported that testing found 13.2 parts per billion (ppb) of inorganic arsenic in the product, compared with a 10 ppb FDA guidance level cited in that coverage. The FDA’s direct guidance document was not independently available for verification here, so the 10 ppb figure should be understood as the level reported by that outlet—not presented as a verified, legally binding federal maximum.
The concern reported was elevated inorganic arsenic in the identified product, not a finding that all apple juice or all Great Value products contained arsenic at that level.

What a Class II recall means
Contemporaneous coverage reported that the FDA classified the recall as Class II. It described that category as involving a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, while serious adverse consequences are considered remote. “Remote” does not mean risk-free. This classification is reported by CBS News/AP; the FDA’s current record and any updated agency instructions have not been independently verified.
What Walmart said at the time
In a report published August 26, 2024, Time said Walmart had removed the product from impacted stores and was working with its supplier to investigate. That report also said no illnesses had been reported at the time. These are time-bounded statements, not confirmation of current store, investigation, or illness-reporting status.
