Was Preordering Borderlands 4 Worth It? Should You Buy It Now or Wait?

Waiting for reviews was safer, especially for performance-sensitive PC players. Since Borderlands 4 has launched, check platform-specific reports and current prices before choosing the base game or DLC bundles.

Waiting for reviews was the safer preorder choice, particularly for players sensitive to PC performance. But Borderlands 4 has already launched, so the useful question now is whether to buy it at today’s price or wait for a sale. Check performance reports for your own platform, consider starting with the base game, and price any expansions separately before choosing a bundle.

Was preordering Borderlands 4 worth it?

In hindsight, preordering made the most sense for fans who wanted to play immediately and were comfortable with their platform’s performance. Players who wanted independent reviews first—especially performance-conscious PC players—had good reason to wait. Windows Central’s September 11, 2025 review tested the Steam version on an RTX 3080, Ryzen 5900X, 32 GB of RAM and NVMe storage, and warned that performance could hinder the experience. That is one reviewer’s assessment on specific PC hardware, not proof that every PC or console has the same issue. Read the Windows Central review.

Other reviews were positive about parts of the game while noting drawbacks. TechRadar praised its refreshed feel and reduced reliance on dated meme humor, but listed PC performance, side-objective rewards and some enemy modifiers as concerns. PC Gamer’s review describes up-to-four-player co-op and its own review hardware; neither review settles how the game performs on every individual setup. TechRadar’s review and PC Gamer’s review provide additional perspectives.

The preorder bonus is not a compelling reason to wish you had bought earlier: the Gilded Glory Pack was offered as a preorder bonus until launch, but 2K says it became separately purchasable afterward. Borderlands Support’s editions and FAQ explains the offer and post-launch availability.

What the launch editions included

These are historical U.S. launch prices announced by 2K on September 12, 2025—not verified current prices. Store prices, availability and bundles can vary by platform, region and date. 2K’s launch announcement described the editions as follows:

Edition U.S. launch price Included content
Standard $69.99 (2K, 2025) Base game.
Deluxe $99.99 (2K, 2025) Base game and Bounty Pack Bundle: four separate post-launch DLC packs with areas, missions, bosses, Vault Cards, gear, vehicles and cosmetics.
Super Deluxe $129.99 (2K, 2025) Deluxe content, Vault Hunter Pack (two Story Packs, each with a new Vault Hunter, story and side missions, and two map regions) and Ornate Order Pack cosmetics.

2K said the Bounty Pack Bundle and Vault Hunter Pack, along with individual DLC packs, would also be sold separately. The U.S. PlayStation Store listing accessed October 4, 2026 shows the three editions and separately listed Story Packs, Bounty Packs, Vault Hunter Pack and Gilded Glory Pack. Its current prices may change, and the listing does not establish prices on other storefronts. Check the U.S. PlayStation Store listing for its live offers.

Should you buy it now or wait for a sale?

There is no single best choice without your platform, current local price and interest in the add-ons. Use these checks before spending:

  1. Check performance on your platform. The cited performance warnings are from PC reviews. Look for current reports and patch information for your platform and, on PC, hardware similar to yours rather than assuming a PC review describes console performance.
  2. Compare the base game with the bundle you would actually use. If you are unsure whether you will enjoy the game, consider the base game at a price you are comfortable paying. Decide about expansions later; the publisher said DLC packs would be available separately, and the U.S. PlayStation Store lists add-ons individually.
  3. Compare live prices, not launch prices. Check the storefront for your region and platform. The launch prices above do not establish today’s offer, and available evidence does not establish current discounts or bundle savings across stores.
  4. Value immediate play honestly. Playing at launch may have been worth paying more to an eager fan, but the preorder period has ended. The listed preorder pack is separately purchasable after launch, so it is not an ongoing exclusive benefit.

What this means for your budget

Treat the base game and optional expansions as separate spending decisions. A bundle is only better value for you if its contents are things you would choose to buy and its current price compares favorably with those items individually. Set a limit based on the price you are willing to pay for the game itself; do not let a larger edition turn uncertainty about the game into a larger upfront purchase.
