Hidden City Ticketing: How Skiplagging Works and What It Risks

Skiplagging uses a ticketed connection as the traveler’s intended destination. Possible fare savings come with airline contract, baggage, and itinerary risks.

Hidden-city ticketing—often called skiplagging—means buying a ticket to a destination beyond a connection city, then intentionally ending the trip at that connection. It can produce a lower fare on some itineraries, but savings are not assured, checked baggage may continue to the ticketed destination, and major airlines’ published contract terms prohibit the practice and reserve remedies.

What hidden-city ticketing is

On an ordinary connecting itinerary, a traveler flies every segment to the ticketed final destination. With hidden-city ticketing, the traveler’s intended destination is instead a connection point and they do not take the remaining flight. For example, a traveler who wants to go from New York to Orlando might buy a New York–Orlando–Dallas ticket and leave the trip in Orlando. Skiplagged describes this approach as using a ticketed layover as the actual destination.

Why a longer itinerary can cost less

Airline fares do not always rise in proportion to distance or the number of flight segments. A connecting itinerary can therefore be priced below a ticket that ends in the connection city. A 2015 arXiv paper gives examples of a single-leg fare costing more than a two-leg fare that contains the same leg under similar conditions. That establishes that such price relationships can occur, not how often they occur or how much a traveler typically saves today. Prices vary, so any possible saving must be checked against the specific flights and full ticket terms.

What airlines’ published rules say

Contract terms are carrier-specific, and they can change. American Airlines and Delta both list hidden-city or point-beyond ticketing among prohibited practices in the cited contract materials. Their stated remedies are possibilities reserved by the contracts, not guaranteed outcomes in every case.

American Airlines

American’s Conditions of Carriage state: “Reservations made to exploit or circumvent fare and ticket rules are prohibited.” The page specifically identifies buying a ticket without intending to fly all flights to obtain a lower fare as hidden-city ticketing. American says it reserves the right to cancel unused ticket portions, refuse to transport a passenger or checked baggage, decline a refund otherwise due on a refundable ticket, or charge the fare that would have applied without the prohibited practice.

Delta

Delta’s U.S. Contract of Carriage defines hidden-city or point-beyond ticketing as purchasing or using a fare beyond the passenger’s actual destination. Delta says it may cancel unused portions, void their remaining value, refuse boarding or baggage, and/or charge the applicable full fare.

Is skiplagging illegal?

These contract provisions establish that the cited airlines prohibit the practice under their published terms; they do not establish a universal rule about whether skiplagging is illegal. The legal position may depend on geography, the operating carrier, how the ticket is constructed, and current contract terms. The available material does not establish a universal legal outcome, so it would be inaccurate to call the practice either universally illegal or universally safe.

Baggage and itinerary risks

Checked baggage may go to the ticketed destination

Checked bags are liable to continue to the itinerary’s ticketed final destination rather than being handed back at the connection where the traveler intends to stop. Skiplagged advises travelers using hidden-city itineraries to bring a backpack that fits under the seat. That is platform guidance, not a guarantee that an airline will permit every carry-on arrangement; check the carrier’s baggage rules before travel.

Disruptions can change the plan

A schedule or routing change, cancellation, or missed connection can remove the intended stop or leave the traveler stranded. Skiplagged’s Guarantee describes coverage for certain ticket cancellations, route changes, and missed connections, subject to its conditions. It requires a claim within 24 hours and specifically excludes trying to check a bag on a hidden-city ticket. This is a seller-provided guarantee, not universal travel protection; review its current terms rather than assuming it covers a disrupted trip.

How to compare the real cost with ordinary fares

Before choosing any itinerary, compare the complete fare and the travel conditions that affect your plans. A lower displayed price may not be the better-value option if it leaves you without your belongings at the intended stop or offers less flexibility.

  • Total price: Compare the full ticket price with ordinary direct and connecting itineraries.
  • Travel time and connections: Account for the total journey and the number of connections.
  • Baggage: Check allowances, fees, and where checked baggage is routed.
  • Changes and cancellations: Read the fare’s flexibility terms and the carrier’s contract provisions.
  • Ticket construction: Determine whether the journey is one itinerary or separate tickets; pricing and contract details depend on the specific carrier and itinerary.

In the United States, the Department of Transportation’s April 24, 2024 rule summary says airlines and ticket agents must disclose baggage, change, and cancellation policies before purchase. This is a disclosure requirement; it does not endorse hidden-city travel or guarantee a particular fare.
