Billy Joel’s 104-show Madison Square Garden residency grossed more than an estimated $260 million in ticket sales, according to Pollstar’s July 2024 report. That is a reported box-office estimate—not a figure for Joel’s personal pay, profit, or take-home income. Pollstar said final numbers were not yet available when it published its report. What the $260 million figure means

The estimate describes gross ticket receipts for the residency: money generated at the box office before accounting for the costs and financial arrangements behind a concert run. It does not establish how much Joel personally received. The available reporting does not disclose his contract share, expenses, taxes, or net payout, so the gross cannot be treated as his earnings.

Pollstar’s wording matters: it reported “more than an estimate $260 million” and noted that final numbers were not in at publication. The figure should therefore be cited as a reported estimate, not a confirmed settlement or audited total. Pollstar, July 2024

How the reported total changed during the run

Pollstar’s June 2023 snapshot, based on Pollstar Boxoffice figures, covered 89 reported residency shows: 1,656,265 tickets sold and $207,751,097 in gross. That was a partial-run tally, not the final count. In July 2024, Pollstar reported that the completed 104-show residency had grossed more than an estimated $260 million, with attendance nearing two million. Report Residency shows counted Tickets or attendance Reported gross

July 2024 wrap 104 Attendance nearing two million More than an estimated $260 million

These are differently dated figures: the first is a specific reported box-office snapshot; the second is an estimate reported after the residency ended. Pollstar also characterized Joel’s average gross across his MSG career as $4 million per show. That career-wide average is not the average for each of the 104 residency dates. Why 104 shows is not the same as 150 MSG appearances

The monthly residency began in January 2014 and concluded on July 25, 2024. Its 104 shows are distinct from Joel’s 150 lifetime performances at Madison Square Garden, a count that includes appearances outside the residency. His first MSG performance was December 14, 1978; the Garden named him its first-ever music franchise in December 2013. Joel’s official final-show announcement Pollstar’s residency wrap

The July 25, 2024 performance was the residency finale and his 150th lifetime MSG show—not his last concert overall. Joel continued touring after the residency. In May 2025, the Associated Press reported that he canceled upcoming concerts after disclosing a normal pressure hydrocephalus diagnosis; that later news does not change the residency’s reported gross. What the figures say—and what they do not

The reporting describes a long-running, high-attendance concert series: by the official 2023 announcement, more than 1.6 million tickets had been sold to fans from all 50 states and more than 120 countries. Joel said he was “kind of flabbergasted that it lasted as long as it did” and, speaking about the 150 lifetime MSG shows, “It’s hard to end, even at 150 lifetime shows.” Official announcement

Those attendance and gross figures do not reveal the economics of Joel’s individual deal. Without public contract terms and cost information, there is no reliable calculation of his share from the $260 million estimate. Gross ticket sales are not interchangeable with artist earnings, and they should not be used as a stand-in for Joel’s net worth.
