No public evidence establishes that Elon Musk’s C5-C6 surgery was the reason Neuralink was created. Musk has described a failed artificial-disc procedure followed by another operation, and Neuralink has discussed possible uses of its technology for people with spinal cord injuries. Those facts show an overlap in subject matter—not a demonstrated cause-and-effect link.
What Musk has said about his C5-C6 surgery
Musk has given a personal account of several neck procedures, but the available accounts are not independent verification from medical records.
His account of the procedures
In a 2023 interview on The Joe Rogan Experience, Musk said he injured a disc during a sumo wrestling bout and described having three neck operations: two artificial-disc procedures followed by a fusion. He discussed a C5-C6 problem involving facet impingement and said the Mobi-C artificial disc did not solve it in his case. The interview transcript is available at the interview transcript.
His 2020 post about the failed procedure
In an October 17, 2020 post reproduced by Tech Times, Musk wrote: “Had Mobi-C disc put in at C5-C6, however 1st surgery failed to remove bone spur sticking into my spinal cord. 2nd surgery took care of it. Recommend using Yelp or other online reviews of doctors. Effectiveness varies widely.” This is Musk’s reported account of his experience, not a general medical assessment of the device or a recommendation for choosing a surgeon. Tech Times reported the post and noted that no official connection between his surgery and Neuralink had been announced: Tech Times’ report.

Why Neuralink’s work on spinal injury invites the question
At Neuralink’s July 2019 launch event, neuroscientist and neuroengineer Joey O’Doherty described restoring movement and communication for people with spinal cord injuries as a potentially impactful application. He said: “there’s some low hanging fruit that I think can really be impactful to help many people’s lives and that’s restoring movement and communication in, for example, a spinal cord injured patient.” Musk also discussed a possible brain-to-spine “neural shunt” as a longer-term idea. These were goals and possibilities, not reports of demonstrated treatment outcomes. The launch-event transcript is available at Neuralink’s 2019 presentation.
What Neuralink’s clinical-study context does—and does not—show
In January 2024, the Associated Press reported that Neuralink was recruiting people with quadriplegia due to cervical spinal cord injury or ALS for a clinical study. AP described the technology as investigational and reported that its safety and effectiveness remained uncertain. That report describes the study context at that time; it is not a current update on recruitment or trial status. See the Associated Press report.

Does the evidence show Musk’s surgery led to Neuralink?
No. Public accounts document Musk’s neck procedures, while Neuralink has separately discussed possible spinal-injury applications. The sources cited here do not include a statement from Musk or Neuralink that his personal C5-C6 surgery motivated the company’s creation. Similarity between a founder’s health experience and a company’s area of interest cannot, by itself, establish why the company was founded.
The careful conclusion is that a connection may seem plausible to readers, but it remains unsubstantiated in the public evidence cited here. Musk’s surgery account, Neuralink’s stated aspirations, and clinical research activity are distinct kinds of evidence; none demonstrates the company’s founding motive.
