How Much Did Madame Web Cost to Make—and How Much Did It Need to Break Even?

The Numbers reports an $80 million production budget and $100.3 million in worldwide theatrical gross for Madame Web. The often-cited $200 million break-even target was a third-party estimate, not a Sony-confirmed figure.

Madame Web had a reported production budget of $80 million and finished its theatrical run with about $100.3 million in worldwide ticket sales. A March 2024 third-party estimate put its break-even target at roughly $200 million worldwide, but that was not a figure confirmed by Sony. Box-office gross is not the same as the amount a studio receives, so the gross-versus-budget difference does not show the film’s profit or loss.

How much did Madame Web cost to make?

The Numbers lists Madame Web’s production budget as $80 million. The Associated Press also described it as an $80 million project in its February 18, 2024, release-weekend report. The figure is the reported production budget, not a complete accounting of the film’s costs to reach theaters.

The Numbers’ title page reports the budget; the Associated Press report provides the contemporaneous description.

How much did Madame Web make at the box office?

The Numbers reports $100,298,817 in worldwide theatrical gross. That total comprises $43,817,106 domestically and $56,481,711 internationally. Box Office Mojo independently lists the same domestic total.

Worldwide theatrical gross $100,298,817 The Numbers

The worldwide total was about 1.25 times the reported $80 million production budget, or roughly $20.3 million higher. That subtraction is a comparison of two headline figures, not a profit calculation.

How much did Madame Web need to make to break even?

ScreenDollars estimated on March 3, 2024, while the film was still in release, that a film with the reported $80 million production budget would need about $200 million in worldwide box office to break even. Treat this as an outside estimate, not a Sony-confirmed threshold: the newsletter did not provide Sony’s accounting or a detailed calculation.

The comparison is not simply box-office gross minus production budget. Ticket receipts are shared among exhibitors and distributors, while the production budget does not include every cost of releasing a film. Sony’s financial supplement reports box-office categories for North America, international markets, and totals, but the material available does not provide a title-specific Madame Web profit-and-loss statement. ScreenDollars’ March 3, 2024, newsletter gives the break-even estimate; Sony’s financial supplements do not establish a film-specific final profit figure.

What did release-week estimates say?

ScreenDollars’ March 3 newsletter projected an eventual worldwide total of $105 million and estimated that the film could be about $100 million in the hole by the end of its theatrical run. Those were forecasts made during release, not audited outcomes. The Numbers’ reported final worldwide theatrical total is $100,298,817.

The film opened wide on February 14, 2024. In its February 18 report, the Associated Press cited Sony’s then-current six-day estimate of $25.8 million. That report also said the film had received a C+ CinemaScore and that critics’ Rotten Tomatoes score was 13% at the time; these are launch-period figures, not current review measurements.

Did home-video sales change the picture?

The Numbers estimates U.S. physical-disc sales of $1,113,640 for DVD and $2,223,121 for Blu-ray, or $3,336,761 combined. These are estimates of physical-disc sales, not a complete account of home-entertainment revenue, licensing, or the film’s total income; they do not establish whether those revenues changed the film’s overall financial result.

The Numbers’ video-sales page lists the estimates.
