When Is the Best Time to Book a Flight? What the Data Says

There’s no universal best booking day. Historical U.S. data suggests different planning windows for domestic, international and holiday flights.

There is no single best day or booking window for every flight. For U.S. domestic trips, Google’s 2024 analysis found the average lowest fares 38 days before departure, within a broader historical low-price range of 21–52 days. For international trips departing the U.S., its average low was 101 days out, and fares generally began rising within 50 days. These are historical averages, not guarantees for your route. If you’re asking when is the best time to book a flight, track the fare for your actual dates and book when the price and itinerary work for you—not because it happens to be Tuesday.

How far in advance should you book a flight?

The answer depends on where you’re flying and when. Google’s September 2024 analysis offers useful U.S.-originating trip benchmarks, but the low-price windows are ranges rather than deadlines.

Trip type Historical fare pattern How to use it
U.S. domestic Average low 38 days before departure; historical low-price range 21–52 days. Google, 2024. Use roughly three to seven weeks out as a monitoring window, not a promise of the cheapest fare.
International, departing the U.S. Average low 101 days before departure; historical low-price range 50 or more days out. Google, 2024. Start comparing earlier and avoid relying on a last-minute drop; prices generally began rising within 50 days.

Google’s 2022 domestic sample found an average low 44 days before departure, with a 21–60-day low-price range. The difference from the 2024 result is a reminder that even a useful historical average shifts by sample and period. Neither result predicts the fare for a particular flight.

Expedia’s January 2025 report described 13–21 days before travel as its overall ideal booking window, based on a different analysis involving ARC and OAG. Its official page was not accessible for direct inspection, so treat this as a competing provider finding—not a universal rule or a reason to delay a booking.

Plan differently for holidays and peak seasons

Busy travel periods have their own historical patterns in Google’s 2024 U.S. data. Start monitoring early, especially if your dates or flight times are fixed; the ranges below are planning guides, not guarantees.

Travel period Google’s 2024 historical low-price range Average low
Thanksgiving domestic trips 26–59 days before departure 45 days before departure
Christmas domestic trips 36–72 days before departure 58 days before departure
March/April spring-break trips 33–59 days before departure Not stated
July/August domestic summer trips 13–43 days before departure Not stated

Does the day you book matter?

Not enough to justify waiting for a particular weekday. Google’s 2024 analysis found Tuesday bookings only 1.3% cheaper than Sunday bookings, the most expensive booking day in that sample. Its 2022 analysis found shopping Tuesday through Thursday was 1.9% cheaper on average than shopping Saturday or Sunday. Expedia’s 2025 report instead identified Sunday as the cheapest booking day in its ARC-backed results. The datasets and periods differ, and the weekday effect appears modest and inconsistent.

Departure day may matter more if your schedule is flexible. In Google’s 2024 U.S. sample, Monday–Wednesday departures were 13% cheaper on average than Friday–Sunday departures. Excluding international trips, the potential difference was 20%. Those are aggregate historical comparisons, not promised savings on any route.

A practical way to decide when to buy

  1. Search your actual route and dates. Check early enough to keep acceptable flights available, particularly for fixed itineraries and busy holiday periods.
  2. Compare the fare with its route history. Google Flights provides price insights and alerts for substantial changes. If the trip is still far away and the fare is acceptable but not compelling, tracking can help you watch for movement.
  3. Test flexible dates. Use the date grid or calendar to compare nearby departure dates. If your plans allow it, check Monday through Wednesday departures as well as weekends.
  4. Judge the whole itinerary, not just the ticket price. Compare stops, total travel time, schedule and fare restrictions. Google’s 2024 sample found nonstop fares 25% more expensive than flights with stops on average; a layover may reduce the price, but only if the trade-off suits your trip.
  5. Buy when the fare and schedule meet your needs. Treat the historical windows as context, not a countdown. Waiting for a specific shopping weekday can backfire if the fare changes first.

What these flight-booking statistics can—and cannot—tell you

Google’s September 2024 findings used four years of aggregated Google Flights data: average round-trip fares observed from August 1 through December 31, 2019, and from January 1, 2021, through August 1, 2024. The analysis covered 6–9-day and 13–16-day trips departing from the top 4,000 U.S. markets; it omitted 2020. Its 2022 analysis used round-trip fares observed August 1, 2017, through August 1, 2022, for the same trip-length categories and market scope.

Those datasets describe past average fares, not every origin, destination, airline or itinerary. Prices for an individual trip can move with demand, capacity, season, airline inventory, flexibility and fare conditions. Expedia’s findings use a separate analysis: its available report description says booking-day results use average round-trip ticket prices from January–October 2024 in ARC’s global airline sales database, while booking-window results use January–November 2024; Expedia also attributes its analysis to ARC and OAG. Different samples help explain why provider recommendations conflict.
