Before approving anything, verify the item and collection, check the full price and fees, and make sure the wallet request matches the action you intend to take.
What you need before using OpenSea
An NFT is associated with a blockchain wallet, so an OpenSea account is not a conventional shopping account with a shipping address. You need a wallet compatible with the blockchain the NFT uses. OpenSea lists wallets such as MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, and Robinhood Wallet among compatible options; its compatibility guidance is based on EIP-6963 and, as of its July 17, 2026 article, does not support multisignature wallets (OpenSea’s compatible-wallet guidance).
You can also sign up by email. OpenSea says this creates self-custodial EVM and Solana wallets whose addresses are permanently tied to that email account. OpenSea does not have access to your private keys, so losing access to the email may mean losing access to the wallet and its assets (OpenSea’s account-creation guide).
- Install wallet apps or browser extensions only from the wallet provider’s official website.
- Never share a recovery phrase or private key, including with anyone claiming to be customer support.
- For Solana NFTs, use a Solana-compatible wallet and keep SOL available for network costs. The collection determines whether the item or offer uses SOL or USDC (OpenSea’s Solana guide).
How to buy an NFT
Pay by card where available
OpenSea’s first-purchase guide, dated September 10, 2025, describes a card checkout through MoonPay. Availability depends on your region, and the guide says card processing and blockchain gas fees apply (OpenSea’s first-purchase guide).

#1 Best Overall
- Open the NFT’s item page and select Buy now.
- Choose debit or credit card, then select Purchase with card.
- Review MoonPay’s fee breakdown and verify your email when prompted.
- Enter payment details, check the final amount, and complete the checkout.
If card checkout is unavailable in your region, OpenSea directs buyers to obtain crypto through their preferred exchange and transfer it to their wallet. Make sure the token and network match the NFT’s checkout requirements before sending funds.
Pay with crypto from a wallet
For a wallet purchase, open the item page, review the listed price and currency, and use the available purchase action. The exact prompts depend on the chain and item. Check the amount in OpenSea and in your wallet before signing; a signature authorizes a blockchain action, not merely an acknowledgement of the listing.

Check the item before committing
OpenSea advises buyers to research the seller, collection, NFT details, and item history. Compare the item and collection information with what you intended to buy, and verify the currency and total shown at checkout. OpenSea warns: “Transactions on the blockchain are irreversible so doing your due diligence is critical” (OpenSea safety guidance, April 23, 2025).
How to list and sell an NFT
To sell, open an NFT you own from your profile and use the listing action shown on its item page. OpenSea’s current Solana instructions give this sequence: select List for sale, set a price, choose Complete listing, and approve the wallet transaction (OpenSea’s Solana guide, September 2, 2026). For other chains, the controls and any required approvals can differ; follow the prompts shown for that item and chain.

A listing makes an NFT available for purchase; it does not guarantee a sale, sale price, or timing. OpenSea supports offers as well as fixed-price purchases. On Solana, the collection determines the offer currency. Review an offer’s amount and currency before accepting it, and inspect the wallet request to ensure it is for the intended action.
Once a creator has made a listing, OpenSea says no extra seller action is needed to complete a buyer’s purchase. A buyer’s claim that you must send more funds to resolve an error or release proceeds is a scam warning, not a normal sale step (OpenSea safety guidance).

What fees and costs to expect
Gas is a blockchain transaction fee paid to validators, not a fee OpenSea controls. OpenSea says gas can change with network activity and is non-refundable even if a transaction fails. Some first-time approvals require gas; on-chain actions such as buying, transferring, and accepting an offer can also incur it. OpenSea’s gas guide, dated July 27, 2026, says that after the first listing in a collection, a fixed-price listing can be gas-free, and an offer can be gas-free after first-time setup; cancelling a listing and some price changes may still require gas (OpenSea’s gas-fee guide). These mechanics vary by chain and can change.
On Solana, OpenSea’s September 2, 2026 fee guide distinguishes platform fees, creator earnings where applicable, and Solana network costs. Buyers pay the item price plus applicable creator earnings and network fees; sellers receive the item price less OpenSea’s fee. When an offer is accepted, the platform fee and creator earnings are taken from the offer amount (OpenSea’s fee guide). Do not apply that Solana breakdown or a fee rate to other chains without checking the current checkout details.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
For any purchase or sale, review the checkout or offer breakdown and the wallet’s transaction estimate before approving. A card route can include processing costs in addition to blockchain fees.
Quick Recap
How to avoid scams and protect your wallet
- Use OpenSea through its official site and contact support through the Help Center. OpenSea says its official emails come from the
opensea.iodomain, and warns against signing transactions prompted by email. - Do not open unsolicited files or follow unknown links that ask you to connect a wallet or sign a transaction.
- Ignore urgent requests to “verify” or “validate” an account, pay a “digitizing fee,” or send ETH to release sale proceeds. OpenSea identifies fake buyer-error messages and requests for extra payment as scam patterns (OpenSea’s phishing guidance).
- Consider a hardware wallet as an optional additional security layer. It is not required to use OpenSea, and the device itself still needs to be kept secure.
