Yes. On July 13, 2024, shortly after the shooting at Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Elon Musk posted on X: “I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery.” He then praised Trump’s toughness and shared an image of Trump raising his fist as Secret Service agents surrounded him.
What Musk posted after the shooting
In his July 13 post, Musk made an explicit endorsement of Trump and wished him a rapid recovery. In a subsequent post, he wrote: “Last time America had a candidate this tough was Theodore Roosevelt.” WIRED reported that Musk also shared a photograph of Trump raising his fist after being escorted from the stage.
The sequence matters: the endorsement followed the shooting, but the posts establish what Musk said and when—not his private reason for endorsing Trump. WIRED’s July 13, 2024 account reported the posts that evening.
What happened at the Butler rally
Trump was speaking at an outdoor campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when shots were fired. He was escorted off stage with blood visible on his face. A spectator, Corey Comperatore, was killed, and other people were injured, according to later Associated Press reporting. The AP described the event as an assassination attempt.

Early accounts published while the situation was unfolding were more cautious: WIRED reported that the Secret Service had not yet officially identified the popping noises as gunshots. Later coverage established that it was a shooting. The distinction reflects what was known at each point, not conflicting descriptions of the event.
How the endorsement fit into Musk’s political activity
WIRED reported that Musk had donated to the pro-Trump America PAC on Friday, July 12, citing Bloomberg, and described it as his first donation of that election cycle. The report gave no donation amount. It also noted that Musk had previously declined to endorse a candidate.

In an August 2024 conversation with Trump on X, Musk said Trump’s response to the shooting showed toughness relevant to national security. The Associated Press reported that Musk formally endorsed Trump two days after the attempt and described the pair as having shifted from rivals to allies during the election season. The AP’s August 13 account of their X conversation provides that later context.
In October 2024, Musk appeared with Trump at a rally in Butler, his first public Trump campaign event since endorsing him, according to the Associated Press report. That later appearance does not change the timing of the original endorsement: it came in July, shortly after the shooting.

- Confirmed: The posts followed the July 13, 2024 shooting at the Butler rally.
- Not established by those posts: Musk’s private motive for endorsing Trump. His public comments and the timing provide context, but do not prove a personal motivation.
