Google Slides is the best free online presentation tool for most people who want to create and collaborate in a browser. Choose Canva for a more visual, template-led start; PowerPoint for the web if you already use Microsoft files; and Prezi if audience interaction is a priority. Each has free access, but free access does not mean every feature, asset, or export is included.

Which free presentation maker should you choose?
Choose Google Slides for straightforward online teamwork
Slides is the strongest starting point if your priorities are creating in a browser, sharing a deck, and working with other people. Google describes it as an online presentation app for creating, formatting, and collaborating. Its help pages also cover importing PowerPoint and Canva files and setting up offline access. Google Docs Editors Help
Offline access is useful if you may lose connectivity, but it depends on setup; do not assume a deck will automatically be available offline on every device. Recording and speaker spotlight are examples of features Google limits to eligible Workspace plans, so a Google account alone does not unlock every capability. Google Slides
Choose Canva when visual design is the main hurdle
Canva is built around templates and visual assets, making it a good fit when you want a polished starting point without designing every slide from scratch. Its presentation page describes browser and mobile editing, collaboration, animation, and exports to formats including PowerPoint, PDF, video slideshow, and Canva website. Canva presentations
#1 Best Overall
Before settling on a design, check whether the specific images, illustrations, or features you plan to use are available to you at no cost. The product page mentions free stock imagery, but it does not document every free-plan boundary. Inspect your final exported deck for shifted text, fonts, or other layout changes.
Choose PowerPoint for the web for Microsoft compatibility
If your workplace or school exchanges PowerPoint files, the web version offers a familiar route to create and edit presentations in a browser, co-author in real time, and run a slide show. It is not a full replacement for desktop PowerPoint: Microsoft lists limitations involving offline authoring, advanced design and presenter functions, animation and transition editing, charts, and media insertion. Pick the web app when browser access and collaboration matter more than those desktop capabilities. If you need to author offline or depend on a specific advanced feature, check Microsoft’s comparison against your task before committing.
Choose Prezi when participation matters more than a conventional slide flow
Prezi is the option to consider when you want audience participation tools rather than only a standard slide show. Its presentation page lists polls, quizzes, Q&A, and word clouds. Its plan guide describes a free Basic license, online creation from templates or existing PowerPoint slides, and 500 AI credits for generating up to 10 talking points. Those are vendor-described features and limits, not independent performance tests. Prezi plans; Prezi presentation features

How to choose without losing time to file or plan limits
- Start from your workflow: Google Slides for general collaboration, Canva for visual templates, PowerPoint for Microsoft-file continuity, or Prezi for audience interaction.
- Check the required feature before building: Confirm that the recording, asset, export, presenter control, or AI function you need is actually available on the free tier.
- Test file round-tripping: Google documents imports from PowerPoint and Canva; Prezi describes importing PowerPoint, Google Slides, Canva, PDF, and Word; Canva lists PowerPoint and PDF among its export formats. Imported or exported slides can change appearance, so open the finished file in the application and device where it will be presented. Google Docs Editors Help; Canva presentations; Prezi presentation features
- Account for connectivity: Google documents offline Slides access, subject to setup. Microsoft says offline authoring is not available in PowerPoint for the web. Google Docs Editors Help; Microsoft: browser and desktop differences
What “free” means for online presentation software
A free entry point can be enough for a complete presentation, but it does not guarantee that every function, stock asset, or export option is included. Google explicitly identifies some features as plan-gated; Prezi specifies a finite AI-credit allowance for its Basic plan; Canva’s presentation page describes free assets without defining all free-plan limits. Microsoft’s browser app has capability differences from its desktop product. Verify the feature you need on the vendor’s current plan and help pages before building a workflow around it.
