Spend Review: I Read My Friend’s Bank Statement So She Never Has To

Reading a friend’s statement can make spending patterns easier to see—if the account holder sets the boundaries and chooses what to do next.

I went through my friend’s bank statement with her so she wouldn’t have to face it alone. The useful part wasn’t judging individual purchases; it was looking for patterns she could decide what to do with. A spending review works best when the account holder sets the boundaries and the review ends with a plan that feels manageable.

How we approached the statement

We looked across recent transactions rather than treating one day or one purchase as the whole picture. A few months can show both regular costs and occasional expenses. Moneysmart recommends starting with recent bank statements or app transactions and sorting spending into categories such as food, transport, home, health and fun. Its spending-tracking guide was last updated on 30 July 2026.

We kept the categories broad enough to make the list readable. The aim was to see where money was going, not to interrogate every choice. Your categories should make sense to you; there is no need to copy someone else’s labels exactly.

What a spending review can—and cannot—show

Grouping transactions can make recurring costs and less frequent expenses easier to notice. That can give someone a clearer starting point for planning bills or working toward a savings goal. It does not, on its own, prove that a purchase was unnecessary, explain why it happened, or guarantee a particular amount of savings.

Consumer.gov’s monthly budgeting guidance suggests writing down a plan, recording spending, comparing actual spending with the plan and using that comparison to shape the next month. The review is therefore most useful as information for a decision the account holder makes—not as a verdict delivered by a friend.

Choose a tracking method that feels comfortable

A notebook, phone or budgeting app can all help record categories. Moneysmart presents these as possible tools, not requirements. The practical choice depends on whether the person prefers paper or digital tracking, how easily they can sort transactions, and how much financial-data access they are comfortable granting an app or service.

There is no head-to-head evidence here establishing one tool as best. A notebook can keep the process simple; a digital tool may make ongoing recording easier for some people. The right option is the one the account holder will use without feeling pressured to share more information than they want to.

Keep the account holder in control

A bank statement is sensitive. Let the person whose account it is choose what to share, what to skip and when to stop. Avoid repeating account numbers, identifying merchant details or private transactions unless the person has clearly agreed and the detail is necessary to the story.

Rules and protections depend on where someone lives and how data is shared. For services that access accounts, UK Financial Conduct Authority guidance says consumers should check whether a provider is authorized or registered, understand the access they grant, and avoid sharing banking security details if they are unsure who they are dealing with. Read the FCA’s UK guidance on account information and payment initiation services.

In the United States, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau advises consumers to understand what financial data a service accesses, how often it accesses accounts, what it stores and for how long, and how to end access and request deletion where applicable. Its guidance is about service-mediated data sharing, not every informal arrangement between friends: CFPB: What to consider when sharing your financial data.

Turn the review into one next step

After sorting the transactions, choose a practical next move together: perhaps compare spending with a monthly plan, set aside money for an upcoming bill, or keep tracking for another month. Moneysmart says tracking can help people spot patterns, manage bills, avoid overspending and work toward savings goals, but the result depends on what the person chooses to do with what they notice.

For me, reading someone else’s statement is less about finding a perfect budget than making a difficult task easier to start. The account holder should leave with more clarity and control—not with a friend’s judgment attached to every line.
