The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) is an entry-level project-management certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI). PMI requires a secondary degree or equivalent and 23 hours of project-management education, but no prior project-management experience. PMI lists an exam fee of $225 for members or $300 at full price; candidates pay after their application is accepted.
What are the CAPM requirements?
PMI’s eligibility requirements are a secondary degree, at least 18 years old, and 23 hours of project-management education completed before the exam. A secondary degree can be a high-school diploma, GED, or global equivalent. PMI says work experience is not required. See PMI’s CAPM certification page for current eligibility details.
How much does CAPM certification cost?
PMI currently displays the following exam fees. Payment is due after PMI accepts the application.
| Candidate status | Exam fee listed by PMI |
|---|---|
| PMI member | $225 |
| Full price | $300 |
These figures are the exam fees shown on PMI’s page, not the full cost of becoming certified. Training, books, and practice materials can add to the total. PMI notes membership savings, but compare membership costs and benefits rather than assuming membership reduces your overall spending. Pricing can vary by region or change, so check the current PMI page before applying.

What does the CAPM exam cover, and how hard is it?
The exam has 150 questions and a 180-minute time limit. PMI says 15 questions are unscored pretest items and 135 count toward the score. The published content weighting is:
| Exam domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Project Management Fundamentals and Core Concepts | 36% |
| Predictive, Plan-Based Methodologies | 17% |
| Agile Frameworks/Methodologies | 20% |
| Business Analysis Frameworks | 27% |
Those figures show the breadth and relative emphasis of the exam, but do not establish a pass rate or a universal level of difficulty. Your preparation needs to address fundamentals, predictive approaches, agile, and business analysis—not just traditional project planning. PMI allows testing at a Pearson VUE test center or through a secure online exam. If you do not pass, PMI says you may attempt the exam up to three times within one year.

How can you meet the education requirement and prepare?
PMI lists an on-demand CAPM Exam Prep Course that fulfills the 23-hour education requirement, as well as instructor-led CAPM instruction through Authorized Training Partners. Its exam-preparation page also lists PMI Study Hall, a practice exam, and the CAPM Exam Official Certification Guide. See PMI’s CAPM exam-preparation resources.
Compare preparation choices on practical terms:
- Education hours: Confirm the course documents all 23 hours required for the application.
- Exam coverage: Check that it addresses the current exam domains and their relative weights.
- Format: Choose between self-paced learning and instructor-led teaching based on your schedule and how you learn.
- Practice: Check whether practice questions or a mock exam are included or cost extra.
- Total cost and access: Include course fees and materials, and check availability in your location.
The named official guide is a possible book choice, but confirm that the edition available to you matches the current exam. Related references such as a PMBOK Guide should be checked against PMI’s current preparation guidance rather than assumed to cover the CAPM exam on their own.

What salary can you get with CAPM?
There is no reliable basis here for treating CAPM as a promise of a particular salary. PMI’s certification page displays $100,750 as an average salary for CAPM-certified project managers in the United States and attributes the figure to Forbes, but the page does not identify the Forbes publication date or methodology.
Separately, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a $100,750 median annual wage for project management specialists in May 2024. This is an occupation-wide U.S. figure, not a salary estimate for CAPM holders and not evidence that the certification causes a particular pay level. In the same May 2024 data, the lowest 10 percent of project management specialists earned less than $59,830, while the highest 10 percent earned more than $165,790. See the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook profile for the occupation and its wage context.
PMI says the credential may support paths such as assistant project manager, project administrator, project analyst, project coordinator, project manager, and PMI technical project manager. These are possible roles, not guaranteed outcomes or proof that the credential alone qualifies someone for a job. BLS says project management specialists typically need a bachelor’s degree, though certification may be beneficial; that describes the occupation, not an additional CAPM exam requirement.
When comparing salary information, keep job family, geography, year, and statistic type consistent. A credential-holder survey or estimate should not be compared as if it were interchangeable with a government median for an entire occupation.

How do you apply and take the exam?
- Confirm eligibility: Meet the age and secondary-degree requirements and complete 23 hours of project-management education before sitting the exam.
- Submit the application: Apply through PMI and wait for acceptance.
- Pay and schedule: After acceptance, pay the applicable exam fee and schedule through PMI for a Pearson VUE test center or secure online testing.
- Prepare across all domains: Use materials aligned with the current exam content, including practice questions if useful.
- Take the exam: Complete 150 questions within the 180-minute limit. PMI permits up to three attempts in one year if needed.
PMI describes CAPM as proving readiness to take on a wide range of projects using predictive project management, agile principles, and business analysis. That is PMI’s description of its certification, not an independent guarantee of job readiness or employment.
How do you maintain CAPM certification?
PMI requires 15 Professional Development Units (PDUs) during each three-year cycle to maintain CAPM. Check PMI’s certification maintenance page for current renewal fees and reporting rules.
Is CAPM worth it?
CAPM can make sense for someone who wants structured project-management study and a credential without first accumulating project-management work experience. Before paying, weigh the exam fee, the cost of completing the education requirement, the time needed to prepare, and the roles you are targeting. The available wage figures do not establish that CAPM itself raises pay, so treat it as a learning and credential decision rather than a salary guarantee.
