His parents’ outcome was different: the FTX bankruptcy estate’s civil case against them was reportedly settled and dropped, but the available account does not establish that they paid a particular amount or admitted wrongdoing.
What did the jury convict Bankman-Fried of?
A Manhattan jury found Bankman-Fried guilty after a month-long trial in 2023. The seven counts were two counts of wire fraud and five conspiracy counts: two to commit wire fraud, one to commit securities fraud, one to commit commodities fraud, and one to commit money laundering. The U.S. Department of Justice described the conduct as a scheme, from 2019 to 2022, that misappropriated FTX customer money and misled investors and Alameda Research lenders.
The prosecution said FTX customers were told their deposits were safe, held in custody, and not being used by FTX, while billions of dollars were transferred to Alameda and used without authorization. The trial jury’s verdict established guilt on the charged counts; the DOJ’s account of the scheme is the prosecution’s description of the evidence, not a substitute for the full trial record.
What sentence did he receive?
On March 28, 2024, Judge Lewis A. Kaplan sentenced Bankman-Fried to 25 years in prison and three years of supervised release. The court also ordered approximately $11 billion in forfeiture. Forfeiture is a separate criminal consequence; it should not be described as restitution paid to victims.

Why did Bankman-Fried’s appeal fail?
On June 12, 2026, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit affirmed the judgment. The appeal challenged, among other things, evidentiary rulings, jury instructions, discovery decisions, and forfeiture. The panel found no reversible error in the challenged rulings.
Would an expectation of repayment have made the transfers lawful?
Bankman-Fried argued in part that the trial court should have let him explain that he expected FTX customers to be repaid and that assets might eventually exceed liabilities. The Second Circuit rejected the idea that intended repayment erased the alleged fraud. It reasoned that customers could be defrauded when their money was transferred and temporarily misappropriated without authorization, even if the defendant expected to repay it later. The court also concluded that later investment values did not answer whether the transfers themselves constituted fraud.

Did the appeals court find the trial unfair?
The panel considered the challenges to the trial process and concluded they did not justify overturning the conviction or sentence. The appellate decision was argued on November 4, 2025, and issued on June 12, 2026. It establishes the Second Circuit’s ruling on the issues before it; it does not, by itself, establish whether a later Supreme Court petition was filed.
What did the FTX estate allege about his parents?
The parents’ case was a civil action brought by the FTX bankruptcy estate, not a part of the criminal jury’s verdict. In 2023, the estate sued Allan Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried. Reuters reported that the complaint alleged a $10 million cash gift, a $16.4 million Bahamas property, and use of access or influence within FTX for personal or preferred benefits. Those figures describe allegations in the estate’s complaint, not findings that the parents received or wrongfully retained those amounts. Their lawyers called the claims false.
A March 2025 report by Protos said the estate settled its claims and dropped the lawsuit. The report does not establish the settlement’s financial terms, any admissions, or how any consideration was allocated between the defendants. The case’s reported resolution therefore does not establish a payment amount or a finding of wrongdoing against either parent.

The Associated Press reported that Bankman-Fried’s parents attended the trial and described their reaction after the verdict. The AP also reported that, before his pretrial detention, his bail conditions required him to remain at their Palo Alto home. These details provide personal context, but they do not establish the parents’ involvement in the crimes for which their son was convicted.
