The FDA’s food-dye crackdown does not mean thousands of grocery items have already been changed or will all change on one deadline. Red No. 3 faces a formal FDA authorization revocation with a 2027 deadline for foods; six other certified colors are the subject of an industry transition made up of company pledges with different scopes and dates. The FDA tracker does not give a verified count of affected grocery products.
What is the FDA changing?
The federal effort has two distinct tracks. The first is a specific legal action against FD&C Red No. 3. The second is a broader effort to move away from six other certified colors through company and industry commitments. These are not equivalent: a formal FDA authorization revocation is different from a voluntary pledge, and a pledge does not establish that every product in a company’s portfolio has already been reformulated.
Red No. 3: a formal authorization revocation
On January 15, 2025, the FDA announced that it was revoking authorization for Red No. 3 in food and ingested drugs under the Delaney Clause. The agency cited evidence of cancer in male rats exposed to high levels of the dye. It also said the way Red No. 3 causes cancer in male rats does not occur in humans, and that available scientific information does not support claims that its use in food or ingested drugs puts people at risk. The FDA’s explanation and deadlines are in its January 15, 2025 update.
Food manufacturers have until January 15, 2027, to reformulate foods containing Red No. 3. Manufacturers of ingested drugs have until January 18, 2028. The drug deadline does not apply to grocery foods.

Six other certified colors: an industry transition
The six colors named in the FDA’s transition tracker are FD&C Green No. 3, Red No. 40, Yellow No. 5, Yellow No. 6, Blue No. 1 and Blue No. 2. On April 22, 2025, HHS and FDA announced a wider initiative to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes, including work with industry on those six colors, natural-color approvals and research with NIH. The announcement said FDA would work with industry to remove them by the end of 2026. The FDA’s live tracker now describes the industry transition as targeted for the end of 2027. These dates reflect different statements: the initial announcement and the tracker’s current target should not be collapsed into one binding deadline.
The six-color effort is not a single blanket final FDA ban. HHS described the Consumer Brands Association’s December 31, 2027 target as voluntary. Individual companies have also made commitments, whose covered products and dates vary.

Which grocery products are changing, and when?
The FDA company tracker, reviewed October 3, 2026, shows why a company-wide headline can obscure what a pledge actually covers. It lists both commitments and status; its status applies to the listed pledge, not necessarily every item sold by that company.

“Complete” means the tracker marks the company’s listed pledge complete; it is not an independent guarantee that every product across the retailer or manufacturer has changed. Conversely, “in progress” does not mean every covered product still contains a synthetic color. For current pledge details and statuses, consult the FDA company tracker.

The tracker includes pledges with different boundaries: selected categories or brands, school-food lines, private labels, new products, or broader portfolios. Neither the tracker nor the FDA’s Red No. 3 notice supplies a verified national count of affected grocery SKUs. The title’s “thousands” should therefore not be treated as an FDA-confirmed product count.
How can you tell whether a specific item has changed?
Use the exact package in front of you rather than a brand-level announcement. Reformulation can happen by category or product, and products in the same portfolio may not change on the same date.

- Read the ingredient list on the package. Look for the color name, such as Red 3 or Yellow 5. FDA regulates color additives and requires approval before an additive or a new use is used in covered products; its consumer color-additive explainer describes the framework.
- Check the manufacturer’s information for that exact product. Confirm the product name and, where available, the product size or version. A company pledge covering a cereal line, frozen foods or a private brand is not proof that every product has already been updated.
- Recheck the label when you buy it again. A pledge deadline is a target for a covered portfolio or category, not confirmation that every store, package or batch changed simultaneously.
For personal budgeting, the available official material establishes reformulation commitments and regulatory deadlines, not a general grocery-price increase. A changed ingredient list by itself does not show that a product costs more; compare the current package price and size if cost is your concern.

FDA has approved several color options from natural sources, with authorization applying to permitted uses rather than an unrestricted right to add them to any food. The agency’s tracker names calcium phosphate, Galdieria extract blue, gardenia blue, butterfly pea flower extract and beetroot red. On February 5, 2026, FDA announced beetroot red approval and an expanded approved use for spirulina extract; the agency described these actions as bringing the administration’s new food-color options to six. The same announcement discussed limited enforcement discretion for certain voluntary “no artificial colors” claims while companies transition to naturally derived colors.

That policy does not mean every “natural” or “no artificial colors” label guarantees a product contains no color additives. FDA continues to require manufacturers to ensure color additives are safe for their intended uses. The specific ingredients on the package remain the practical way to see what is in an individual product.

The broader initiative also addressed Citrus Red No. 2 and Orange B, alongside natural-color reviews and NIH research. Those actions are part of the wider policy effort, not evidence that the six-color company tracker is a complete inventory of every color-additive action.
