Como calcular a variação percentual em 6 passos
- Identifique os valores. Anote o valor inicial, que será a base da comparação, e o valor final.
- Calcule a diferença orientada. Faça valor final menos valor inicial: Δ = Vf − Vi.
- Divida pelo valor inicial. Calcule Δ ÷ Vi. Essa etapa expressa a diferença em relação à base.
- Converta em porcentagem. Multiplique o quociente por 100. Se usar uma planilha, também pode formatar o quociente como porcentagem.
- Interprete o sinal. Resultado positivo significa aumento, negativo significa redução e zero significa que não houve mudança.
- Redija o resultado com contexto. Informe o que mudou e, quando necessário, o período comparado. Arredonde de modo adequado, sem esconder a direção da mudança.
A fórmula completa é ((Vf − Vi) ÷ Vi) × 100. O valor inicial fica no denominador porque é a referência usada para medir a mudança. A Microsoft explica a fórmula e o cálculo de aumentos e reduções no Excel.
Exemplos de aumento e redução
Aumento de R$ 80 para R$ 100
A diferença é R$ 100 − R$ 80 = R$ 20. Divida R$ 20 por R$ 80: 0,25. Multiplique por 100: aumento de 25%.
Redução de 50 para 35
A diferença orientada é 35 − 50 = −15. Divida −15 por 50 e multiplique por 100: −30%, ou redução de 30%.

Exemplo com ganhos
Em um exemplo da Microsoft, ganhos passam de 2.342 para 2.500. O cálculo (2.500 − 2.342) ÷ 2.342 resulta em aproximadamente 0,06746, equivalente a aumento de 6,75% após arredondamento. De 2.500 para 2.425, o cálculo resulta em redução de 3,00%.
Qual valor usar como base?
Em uma comparação temporal comum, use o valor inicial como denominador. Não divida pela diferença nem pelo valor final: isso muda a base e, portanto, o percentual. Para a mesma diferença absoluta, inverter a ordem dos valores não produz percentuais opostos de mesma magnitude: de 50 para 75 há aumento de 50%; de 75 para 50 há redução de aproximadamente 33,33%. Variação percentual e pontos percentuais não são iguais
Quando duas taxas percentuais são comparadas, a diferença entre elas pode ser expressa em pontos percentuais; a variação percentual mede a mudança relativa à taxa inicial. Por exemplo, de 20% para 25% há aumento de 5 pontos percentuais. Em relação à taxa inicial de 20%, isso corresponde a aumento de 25%: (25% − 20%) ÷ 20% × 100.
Como calcular na planilha
Se o valor inicial estiver em B2 e o valor final em C2, digite =(C2-B2)/B2. Formate a célula do resultado como porcentagem. A fórmula retorna a direção da mudança: um resultado positivo representa aumento e um negativo, redução. Para calcular com base em outras células, ajuste as referências mantendo o valor inicial no denominador.

O que fazer se o valor inicial for zero?
A fórmula não pode ser aplicada quando o valor inicial é zero, porque exigiria divisão por zero. Nesse caso, informe a diferença absoluta ou explique a convenção específica usada no contexto. Não apresente uma variação percentual padrão sem uma base definida.
Em séries temporais, defina o período comparado
Uma variação pode comparar observações consecutivas, um mês com o anterior, um período com o ano anterior ou os 12 meses anteriores. Essas bases temporais respondem a perguntas diferentes. Ao apresentar um resultado, especifique os períodos; o Banco Central do Brasil distingue medidas de variação de séries temporais, incluindo mensal, anual e em 12 meses.

Como interpretar mudanças sucessivas
Percentuais sucessivos incidem sobre bases diferentes. Uma alta de 50% seguida de queda de 50% não retorna ao valor inicial: a queda é calculada sobre o valor já aumentado. Para analisar várias etapas, calcule cada mudança sobre o valor vigente no início daquela etapa, em vez de somar as taxas.
Variação percentual ou diferença percentual?
“Variação percentual” costuma indicar uma comparação ordenada, como um valor antes e depois, usando o inicial como base. “Diferença percentual” pode ser usada com convenções diferentes, especialmente quando não há uma ordem temporal ou uma base natural. Para evitar ambiguidade, escreva a fórmula ou declare explicitamente qual valor serve de referência.
