On April 29, 2025, the company said its Amazon Haul team had considered listing import charges on certain products, but the idea was never approved and would not happen. The White House had called the reported proposal “a hostile and political act.”
What Amazon said it had considered
Amazon’s spokesperson Tim Doyle said the idea was limited to the team running Amazon Haul, the company’s low-cost storefront: “The team that runs our ultra low cost Amazon Haul store considered the idea of listing import charges on certain products. This was never approved and is not going to happen.” The statement was published by Amazon on April 29, 2025.
That account does not describe a change to Amazon’s main retail site. The Associated Press reported that the consideration concerned Haul, not the main site, and that Amazon said no tariff-cost display was planned. Nor did Amazon specify a final format: the initial report described showing a tariff share alongside a listed price, while Amazon referred to listing import charges on certain items. The exact presentation was not established.
Why the White House called it “hostile”
At a White House briefing on April 29, press secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to the reported proposal by saying, “This is a hostile and political act by Amazon.” That was her political characterization of the report, not an established finding about Amazon’s intent. CBS News reported her comment and Amazon’s clarification.

The proposal first appeared in a Punchbowl News report that cited an anonymous person familiar with the matter. CBS likewise described the initial account as based on a person familiar with it. It should therefore be treated as a report of an internal idea, not an Amazon announcement or evidence that customers were about to see a new fee or price label.
What is known about Trump’s call to Bezos
President Donald Trump told reporters that he had spoken with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos that morning. The AP separately reported, citing an unnamed source familiar with the matter, that Trump called to complain about the report. The public acknowledgment establishes that Trump said a call took place; the account of its purpose was anonymously sourced.

What Warren’s letter does—and does not—establish
On April 30, 2025, Senator Elizabeth Warren wrote to Bezos seeking clarification about Amazon’s consideration of the display and the reported conversation. Her letter raised questions about timing and possible influence; it does not establish that a threat, favor, or quid pro quo occurred. Warren’s letter is available from her Senate office.

Reports published during the tariff debate in April 2025 cited figures that describe that moment, not current tariff rates or proof that tariffs caused particular price changes. CBS News said tariffs on goods imported from China had reached as high as 145% at that time, while a temporary pause left a 10% baseline for most other nations. Those are time-bound historical figures, not rates to apply to a purchase today. CBS News’ April 2025 account provides that context.

The same report said SmartScout data showed nearly 1,000 of Amazon’s top 100,000 products had increased in price, with an average increase of about 30%. Amazon characterized the share as about 1% of those top 100,000 products and said 6% was the most common increase; it also argued that a small number of very large increases skewed the 30% average. These attributed snapshots do not establish that tariffs caused each price movement.
