The company initially said he died after a “long illness”; a later family obituary said he had stage four pancreatic cancer and died after an adverse reaction to an immunotherapy treatment.
When did Walt Ehmer die, and how old was he?
Ehmer died on Friday, September 6, 2024, at age 58, according to his family’s obituary. WABE and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported his death two days later. WABE said Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens announced it and that Waffle House’s board confirmed it to the station.
What was Walt Ehmer’s cause of death?
Waffle House’s initial public statement, reported by WABE, described Ehmer’s death as following a “long illness” but did not identify a diagnosis. The family obituary later supplied more detail: it said he was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer in 2023, underwent chemotherapy, whole-brain radiation and a phase one clinical trial, and agreed to be the first pancreatic cancer patient to try a new immunotherapy treatment. The obituary said an adverse reaction followed quickly. That medical account comes from the family; the company’s initial statement did not name the illness or treatment.
How long was Walt Ehmer CEO of Waffle House?
Ehmer became Waffle House CEO in 2012 and remained in the role until his death in 2024—roughly 12 years. His family’s obituary traces a career at the company spanning more than 32 years, beginning when he joined in 1992.

What was Ehmer’s leadership style and legacy?
His family described him as a hands-on leader who spent time in Waffle House restaurants working alongside associates. In a 2020 Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business interview quoted by WABE, Ehmer spoke about the scale of staffing and service. He said the company had “45,000 employees” and “over 2 million shifts a year” to staff and manage. Those are figures from his remarks in 2020, not current workforce or operating estimates. He also described the company as “one family” in which “Everybody does the same thing, everybody wears one uniform.”
Beyond Waffle House, the family obituary lists board and community service with the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Foundation, Atlanta Police Foundation, Aaron’s, and the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. It also notes several Georgia Tech roles, including chair of the Georgia Tech Alumni Association from 2012 to 2013. These biographical details help explain why tributes after his death came from both business and civic institutions. WABE quoted Mayor Andre Dickens calling Ehmer a “proud Georgia Tech alumnus,” and the Atlanta Police Foundation praised his support for its public-safety mission.
