Who was J. Michael Cline?
James Michael Cline, commonly known as J. Michael Cline, was an entrepreneur and investor best known for co-founding Fandango. He later built or backed businesses across several sectors and held leadership roles at investment firms.
TechCrunch reported that Cline was 64 when he died in July 2024. TechCrunch’s July 18, 2024 account and TheWrap’s report identified him as a Fandango co-founder and described his later business career.
What happened when Cline died?
TechCrunch reported that Cline died after a fall at a Manhattan hotel on July 16, 2024. The publication quoted an NYPD statement saying officers found an unconscious, unresponsive man with injuries indicative of a fall from an elevated position. The statement, as quoted in the report, said the investigation remained ongoing.

That account establishes the reported date and circumstances, not a definitive public finding about how or why the fall occurred. TheWrap used language suggesting suicide, but the reviewed sources do not establish a later official determination. They also do not establish a family statement. It would therefore be inaccurate to present a motive or manner of death as settled fact.
How did Cline help build Fandango?
Cline co-founded Fandango with Art Levitt. The sources disagree on the launch year: TechCrunch and The Independent give 1999, while TheWrap gives 2000. The discrepancy is unresolved in these accounts.

TechCrunch described the early business as an online movie-ticketing service that charged processing fees and sold online advertising. The site reported that Cline left in 2011, about four years after Comcast acquired the company.
Fandango’s business has since expanded beyond movie tickets. Its About page describes current offerings that include movie and TV information, ticketing, trailers, home entertainment and streaming. That present-day scope should not be mistaken for the service Cline co-founded at launch.

What did Cline do after Fandango?
Cline continued as a company builder and investor. TechCrunch listed R1 RCM, Accumen, Accolade, Everspring, Dresr and Insureon among the ventures he built, and reported that he founded Accretive in 1999. TheWrap identified him as a managing partner of Accretive and executive chairman of Juxtapose at the time of his death.
TechCrunch reported that Cline became executive chairman of Juxtapose in 2018. Together, those roles trace a career that moved from helping create a consumer-facing ticketing business to founding and investing in companies across a wider range of industries.
