The useful question is not just which style sounds most like you; it is whether your approach fits the people and situation in front of you.
What does a leadership-style quiz tell you?
Leadership-style quizzes group behaviors into labels such as coaching, directing, or involving others in decisions. Those labels depend on the framework behind the quiz: there is no single universal set of styles. A result is best read as a snapshot of your self-reported habits, not proof of how your team experiences you.
For example, Psychology.com’s quiz describes five patterns—Visionary, Coach, Democrat, Pacesetter, and Commander. Its tool uses 20 statements, four for each pattern, rated on a five-point agreement scale. It sums the ratings for each pattern and displays the highest score alongside the full mix. These are the design and categories of that publisher’s quiz, not an official or exhaustive leadership model. See Psychology.com’s quiz and its explanation of the results.
How to interpret your result
Read the profile as a tendency
A high score may point to behaviors you recognize in yourself; it does not establish that you always lead that way. People can draw on different approaches, and the same behavior can help in one situation and hinder in another.

Check it against specific examples
Think of recent moments when you set direction, handled disagreement, delegated work, or helped someone improve. Compare what you intended to do with what you actually said and did. If appropriate, ask people you work with for concrete feedback about what helped and what made their work harder. A self-report quiz does not measure team impact or collect that observer feedback for you.
Do not treat a score as a credential
Psychology.com describes its quiz as an educational self-reflection tool, not a validated psychometric instrument. Unless a quiz’s developers provide suitable validation evidence, do not treat its result as a formal assessment. A short self-report quiz does not diagnose personality, predict job performance, or certify leadership ability. Psychology.com explains the scope and limitations of its own quiz.

Why adapting your approach matters
In “Leadership That Gets Results,” Daniel Goleman argues that effective leaders draw on distinct styles in the right measure and at the right time. He writes, “New research suggests that the most effective executives use a collection of distinct leadership styles—each in the right measure, at just the right time.” This is Goleman’s framing, not evidence that any particular quiz is validated or that one style guarantees success. His central practical point is that flexibility can be learned: notice your default, consider what the moment and people require, and practice another approach when it may serve better. Read Goleman’s article in Harvard Business Review.
What to do after taking a quiz
- Name the behavior, not just the label. Translate your result into something observable, such as giving clear direction, asking for input, or prioritizing speed.
- Identify the context. Consider what the task requires, how much experience the people involved have, and whether the situation calls for alignment, learning, or rapid action.
- Choose one behavior to practice. If you tend to decide quickly, try asking for perspectives before settling on a plan. If you tend to seek consensus, practice stating a clear decision when delay would be costly.
- Review what happened. Look at the outcome and the responses of people involved. Use those observations—not a quiz label alone—to decide what to repeat or adjust.
Other ways to explore your leadership style
Harvard Business Review published an assessment titled “What’s Your Leadership Style?” by Karen West, Elliott Stixrud, and Brian Reger on June 25, 2015. Its accessible landing page confirms the title, authors, and date, but does not expose the assessment’s questions or results, so no particular profile or scoring method can be reliably described here.
