Iran’s rial hits a reported record low as oil exports stall—not because the country is running out of oil

Iran’s currency and oil revenues are under severe pressure, but stalled exports do not mean the country is running out of oil underground.

Iran’s rial fell to a reported record low in Tehran on September 29, 2026, while a blockade and sanctions sharply constrained crude exports and the foreign-currency earnings they can bring. That is a crisis of getting oil to buyers and turning sales into usable money—not evidence that Iran is about to exhaust its underground oil reserves. The precise reach of payment restrictions is unclear, and the reported exchange rate is a dated market quote, not a universal official rate.

What happened to Iran’s currency?

A record-low market quote, not a single official rate

The Associated Press reported that traders in Tehran were exchanging more than 2.5 million rials for one U.S. dollar on September 29, 2026, a new record low at that time. It is a snapshot of the market rate reported in Tehran on that date; exchange rates can move quickly, and the figure should not be read as a timeless or universal official rate.

The AP linked the decline to war-related economic pressure, a U.S. naval blockade on Iranian oil, new sanctions, and the country’s existing sanctions burden. A weaker rial means each rial buys less foreign currency at the quoted rate, adding pressure when the government and businesses need foreign currency for transactions tied to imports and trade.

Is Iran running out of oil to sell?

The immediate problem is exportability

The available reporting points to a disruption in shipping, not imminent geological depletion. Iran’s oil reserves underground, oil being produced, crude cargoes leaving port, and foreign currency available after a sale are distinct things. A shortage of export routes or buyers can prevent oil from generating revenue even while reserves remain in the ground.

In a Reuters report dated September 1, 2026, Iran had gone about seven weeks without meaningful crude exports through the Strait of Hormuz. Reuters also reported that fresh cargoes were no longer reaching China, which it described as Iran’s only major remaining oil customer. This describes a severe interruption in the reported trade flows; it does not establish that every Iranian oil sale stopped everywhere or that the country has no oil left to produce.

What happens between a shipment and usable revenue?

For an oil sale to support the economy, crude must be produced and shipped, reach a buyer, and generate proceeds that can be accessed and used. Each stage can be constrained separately. The September reporting describes shipping and financial pressure, but does not provide a comprehensive accounting of all export routes, completed sales, or foreign-currency balances that Iran can use.

How much Iranian crude was reported at sea?

Reuters reported estimates from two tracking firms. These figures describe crude afloat, not proven reserves or a complete official inventory. The two rows measure different things, so they should not be combined or treated as directly comparable.

Measure Reported figure Attribution and date
Iranian crude in floating storage west of the blockade line 41.7 million barrels on August 26, up from 35.5 million barrels at the end of July Kpler data, as reported by Reuters on September 1, 2026
Total Iranian crude afloat 107 million barrels, down from 135 million barrels Vortexa data, as reported by Reuters on September 1, 2026

Floating storage can indicate that crude is at sea or being held rather than moving through a normal delivery chain. The reported figures show a large volume afloat and a change over time; on their own, they do not establish how much could be delivered, sold, or converted into accessible funds.

Why do stalled exports matter for the rial and public finances?

Oil exports are a major source of foreign-currency earnings for Iran. When shipments are interrupted, fewer export proceeds may be available to support government finances and reserves, adding pressure to an already weak currency. Reuters described the export interruption as a threat to that earnings stream and an added strain on public finances and reserves. It did not establish that all foreign-held reserves are inaccessible.

Reuters also paraphrased Kpler analyst Homayoun Falakshahi as warning that lost exports could force Tehran to finance spending by printing money, with inflation risk. That is a possible consequence, not proof that a particular amount has been printed or that a specific future inflation rate is certain.

Does “can’t get its money from customers” mean every payment is blocked?

No. The reporting supports a serious squeeze on shipments and revenue access, but it does not show that every customer payment is blocked or that all proceeds from every sale are unusable. Sanctions and disrupted shipping can make collection and use of foreign currency more difficult; the exact reach and duration of restrictions on payment channels are not established in the cited reports.

That distinction matters for personal-finance interpretation. A weak market exchange rate, fewer oil cargoes reaching a buyer, and difficulty accessing some proceeds are related pressures, but none by itself gives a complete balance sheet of Iran’s available foreign currency or predicts exactly what the rial will do next.

How should global oil figures be interpreted?

The International Monetary Fund estimated that more than 1.1 billion barrels of crude had not reached the global market by the end of May 2026 because of broader war-related disruption. That is a global estimate, not a count of Iranian reserves, Iranian exports, or Iranian crude waiting at sea.

The World Bank’s April 2026 outlook, which predates the September reports, said conflict, sanctions, and unrest had severely disrupted economic activity and warned that possible oil-export disruption could add fiscal pressure and currency depreciation. It provides earlier economic context, not a current measurement of Iran’s export flows or payment access.
